Kinja'd!!!

Saw this new Hellcat with paper tags at a gas station. Nothing weird, that’s its natural habitat... wait the pump is out of service? That’s because it belongs one of the convenience store employees. I had no idea you could make enough to afford a $70k car working at a gas station. Hooray for 96 month loans I guess? On a related note, my daughter has recently developed an obsession with Challengers and points out every one on the road. Which is a lot, because here they are inexplicably just as popular as Mustangs and Camaros.

Sounds like someone has some rich parents. When I was in high school, one of my co-workers at the country club had an E39 538i. He sold it and was without a car to drive, so his parents pretty much gave him the 2009 6MT M6 convertible to drive around. He drove it everyday for something like a year. I wish my parents were rich.

It’s brilliant, when you think about it. He visits all of the stores in the state in two hours and then takes the rest of the month off.

I’ve seen this car parked at the gas station almost every day for the last two weeks... seems like a long stay, but the place did just open a few months ago so it’s possible they have a regional manager in getting going smoothly.

He probably owns the gas station or his parents do. My friends who owned gas stations had nice cars.

I really hope that’s at least partially true. When premium fuel for your 700 horsepower beast is a business expense, you’re doing it right.

Eh...I had some guy make a comment about how I can afford so many cars at one of my jobs. He doesn’t know I work another job where I make 4x as much, plus my wife runs a few of her own companies/does a lot of side work and has a regular job. If you hustle you can make things happen.

Oh yeah if you own the place and do it right, sure. (When I worked at a gas station the owner drove a busted old Sonoma because we sucked at making money.) This is a large corporate chain, though. Could be a corporate guy, though - this is a new spin-off thing from the local grocery mega-chain that is just getting started.

My guess is enabling parents. They may be rich, or they may just let their man-child live with them rent-free so he can pursue his dream of running the day shift at a gas station while maintaining a $1000/month car payment.

Have this Challenger I saw on the Nürburgring last sunday, so you can show your daughter Challengers also exist across the pond, and are best kept behind fences.

I hadn’t thought about a lease - I do recall hearing about specials to lease these in the $600 range. At that price a young guy splitting rent with roommates could afford one on a modest job if he wanted to put everything into the dream car.

Someone else suggested that. I wasn’t about to go in and ask who it belonged to, but there is a lot of money in this area. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone was letting their son/daughter drive a Hellcat to work. I’ve gotta think even listing as a 3rd driver a teenager on the insurance for your 707 hp car has to cost an absurd amount.

People who makes comments like the one that guy did rarely understand the whole picture. This post was intended to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Of course there are ways to make a ton of money at a convenience store, of course you can work two jobs, etc. Last year one of the secretaries at work bought a new 2.0T ATS coupe. One of the other other secretaries went on a big rant about how it was so irresponsible to be buying a 2-door CADILLAC on her salary and doesn’t she understand how bad of a look that is to spend so big on a such a frivolous thing. Meanwhile the ATS almost certainly was less expensive than the Highlander Limited the complainer drives and the woman who bought the Cadillac drove a busted up Impala for ages to save up and her kids are fully grown and have jobs of their own so she doesn’t need a “practical” crossoverwagonutilything from a mainstream brand that actually costs more than small car from a luxury marque.

So I make a pretty great living, and I worked hard to get here. As a reward to myself, I bought my S600 two years ago. I was immediately chewed out by the COO for buying such a flashy car, and how it’s really irresponsible at my age, even though her Ford Escape is worth nearly twice as much as my decade old Benz.

Not that inexplicable, they are better looking than either the Mustang or the Camaro. Which is typical Chrysler, tbqh: all looks, mediocre go.

I got you. Yeah this guy was like, is that your truck also? I didn’t realize ——- got paid so much. I just laughed and thought, they don’t, that’s why I hustle. Also, I own a forty year-old motorcycle, a six year-old Wrangler (bought used), a four year-old BMW (bought used), and a sixty year-old truck. Plus my mortgage is as low as the rent I paid in college, and my only vice is alcohol and the occasional cigar. Of course I just had to smile and nod.

Fair points. Nationwide, I think the Mustang outsells the Challenger something like 2 to 1 so it seems a little strange that I see so darn many Challengers here.

I know a lot of the convenience store owners also work 30-50 hours at their own stores so it’s possible he owned the store too. Or was a part owner at it. And if your store is selling lottery games and liquor and beer? You can make a decent chunk of change every month.

Oh definitely. The interesting thing about this store is that it’s a chain run by grocery store company, so I don’t think it was an owner. But yeah, I probably wouldn’t have batted an eye if it was a typical corner store on the outskirts of town.
