I’ll just do the link like this so it’s less likely to get Kinja’d.

Still doesn’t sound like it was Uber’s fault at all to me. No one slows down through an intersection just because there is a car waiting to turn left there.

That begs the question. Not knowing how long a yellow light will be, will an autonomous car gather the info needed to determine if its more effective to stop before the red, or be in the intersection when it turns and therefore be allowed to clear the intersection?

Surely it would have to make sure there was no car following too close to the rear if it were to brake hard, and would it even do so in the case that it causes its passengers to be thrown into their belts?

Or could it do it like 99% of the population and just gun it and hope for the best?

It’s fine to be in the intersection when it turns (provided there is room to exit). They just need to make sure they are not entering on red (at least in NY, maybe other states have other laws). I suspect self-driving cars will play this conservatively (here it’s not clear it even turned yellow before the car entered the intersection).

One interesting thing, for both humans and self driving cars is that some places (I’ve seen it in Austin) have a marker line to indicate “if you’re not past this line by the time the light goes yellow, you should stop”. Seems potentially helpful, though might just be more clutter to have it.

I’m pretty sure I saw that same Volvo every day on my way to work/lunch.
