That looks to be about the size of the rear pump on my Cruise O Matic. The front pump is half again to twice as large. Two pumps of maximum pumpage because old autos are one giant semi-contained leak and Ford was being cautious as hell.

I guess Holley’s not the only place to find double pumpers lol.

Hey, speaking of Cruise-O-Matics, did you see the MX in that new Hagerty vid ?

Nice. How much did you pick up of the construction? It’s a little... odd in comparison to its contemporaries. Instead of having two Simpson ring gears with bands on them, it has a band each for the planet carrier and the ring, with two clutches on the two sun inputs and a sprag clutch inside the output assembly. It’s... quirky.

If it’s like the old old powerglides with two pumps, the rear pump is so you can push-start it like a manual (driveshaft spins the pump which engages gear and starts the engine)

Well, that and to provide protection for rolling in neutral and general extra help. At the time the modern paradigm of a trans that can’t be safely rolled in neutral was pretty foreign - but not so foreign that Ford didn’t delete the rear pump in the late 60s to make room in the FX case for MX gears, making the FMX...
