To be honest, I discovered this song after its heyday, but it rings true with me.

I was born in 1971, and grew up in the part of Southern California that spawned Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, and in Hollywood, bands like X and the Germs. To the south in Orange County, there was TSOL and Social Distortion, Suicidal Tendencies from Venice, and the Minutemen from Pedro.uWe hated metal. The Sunset Strip scene of the 80s pushed hardcore out of Hollywood, and eventually killed it.

It was not until the end of the 80s that I met a friend who turned me on to metal that I would have otherwise rejected as a matter of principle. Probably to no one’s surprise, it was 1987 when I first heard Guns n Roses, and they were hard to ignore. Despite my best efforts, more and more of my friends seemed to end up being metalheads, and a Judas Priest show in Denver in 1990 sealed my fate, as did my discovery of Metallica (before they died in 1990), and Megadeth.

I am babbling.

Hey, Less Than Jake! Just don’t bring up Reel Big Fish. IIRC, 505Turbeaux still resents them for what happened to him when they visited his college.

Ah LTJ <3 Miss Tesla’s song for me is “Hopeless Case”. She dubbed it my song during our first couple weeks. Makes me bawl every time.

Shout out to Reel Big Fish as well, a band she introduced me to! :)

I don’t think I’ve listened to these guys in a decade or more, but when I saw the pic. I knew the band/song right away.

Sidenote: I know it’s a lot more melodic punk than hardcore, but what do you think of Four Year Strong? Those guys can really come up with songs that have some some weird and cool time signatures, rhythms, harmonization and whatnot.

Hardcore is still alive and well. Much more alive than most punk scenes. Metal and punk/hardcore have never mixed too well. Hiwever, I do know a group of hardcore kids that are currently in a fairly successful touring metal band.

None of us would consider Guns and Roses or Judas Pruest Metal. That’s all butt rock stuff. My step uncle was friends with Mike Ness back in the day. He was going to give me all his old Social Distortion flyers but got all nostalgic when he pulled them out and ended up keeping them. I had no idea about his past, but he started singing along to a Minor Threat CD as I was driving him home from a drug recovery class and we both turned and looked at each other with the same “you listen to these guys?” look. Apparently he helped them throw a show in Southern California once.

I can’t fucking stand the fake ska revival stuff though. Bunch of middle American sububanites imitating working class Jamaicans and English skinheads. I like the real stuff.
