My aunt’s dog died. He was almost 12. A full-bred Akita. Named Jake. She got home from work today and found him dead in the house.

She’s a recently recovering alcoholic and I’m really afraid this will cause her to relapse. She’s divorced and the dog was her only companionship. She told me “I’m all alone for the first time in 12 years.”

Damn.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but it’s time for her to go to the shelter and adopt a dog. Or two. She’ll move right along, I predict. No time to lose. That’s what’s wonderful about dogs.

Yep. She will. Thank goodness. It’s just a process for her. She needs a companion asap though because I don’t want her by herself

Perhaps you could take a drive to the local pound yourself and snap a few cell phone pics for her. She might aim for something slightly less immense than the previous dog... The adopted dogs are always the best dogs. Most personality, most appreciative. And of course, Auntie will spoil the new pup...

Yeah, I keep telling her she needs a small dog. She lives 3.5 to 4 hours from us and comes down to see us 3-4 times a year. She drives a Corolla now instead of the Malibu in the previous picture. This dog barely fit in the Corolla. Smaller dog would be easier for her to handle and travel with. And it’d live longer.
