...is renting a manual car on Turo to teach someone how to drive one considered a dick move?

Have a friend who asked me, I want to teach him to forward the manual cause, but kinda don’t want to do it on my car.

I don’t think so, I say if you’re willing to rent your manual car on Turo then this should be expected. If you really don’t want to take that risk, then don’t rent your car. I’m planning on teaching my sister this way.

I mean, I’d personally feel bad about doing that to someone else’s car, but I think renting your car out on Turo is pretty stupid, so I wouldn’t judge you for doing it.

If you feel like he’s going to burn out your clutch in 30 minutes, then he sounds unteachable. I’ve tought two people how to drive stick on my cars and nothing bad happened...

If you’re dumb enough to rent your car on Turo, you’re dumb enough to let my sister destroy your clutch.

Well, you just convinced me not to put my car on Turo. I can teach someone to drive stick in my car, but I wouldn’t trust someone else to.

I taught two teenagers how to drive stick in my Mazda in an afternoon. There is a lot more stalling than clutch burning going on. Was not worried about the car, it took it fine.

Eh, at first I thought maybe, but if you are renting a manual car out you have to assume it will be shifted like shit.

I’d say yes, it’s a dick move, but I have an alternative. Find car dealership (the sketchier the better, although legit dealers can work too.) Have him go there and be interested in the cheapest stick shift on the lot. The salesman will probably be willing to give him a lesson. After he’s gotten to the point of not totally sucking, you can give him more lessons in your car.

One objection to this is he’ll have to drive in traffic right off the bat. To that I’ll say this method is actually how I learned (except I intended to and bought the car.) And it actually helps. It’s kind of a sink or swim way of learning.

I wouldn’t feel too sorry for the person who puts a manual transmission car on Turo. That said, I’d probably try to rent from Budget or one of the other big companies just in case something went wrong — that wouldn’t even be a rounding error for them whereas it could do significant financial harm to the Turo person.

Dealer tried to teach me. It was a shitshow. Some folks just can’t explain anything.

Bought the car, had a friend drive it home for me, and taught myself around the neighborhood for the next few weeks.

I don’t think the challenge was to replace a potentially dick move with a decidedly dick move...

I honestly wouldn’t hesitate to begin trying to teach someone in my car. Now, if after a try or two I’m convinced the clutch won’t make it, I’m not going to keep trying - but I stalled 8 million times while learning and never came close to clutch destruction.

If they’re willing to rent their car out they should know how the rental game goes. Additionally it’s especially a dick move in bird culture.

That assumes that someone at the dealer can actually drive a manual. When I test drove a FoST at the Ford dealer they just tossed me the keys, because none of the salespeople could drive it.

Yeah. The thing you don’t want is to teach them to drive on hills without a hill assist, because that’ll burn your clutch up fast.

Oh yeah I know, I taught another friend in my Solstice back then. Although I was rest assured said friend had enough money to replace my entire car should he burn out my clutch, that’s why I agreed to it.

Kinda chicken and egg on that one. If you have hill assist you wouldn’t really learn properly, I can guarantee the learner would panic when they get into a car that doesn’t have it.

I’ve never heard of ANY major rental outlet carrying manual cars here. In Europe maybe, and that’s primarily the reason people are asking me to teach them, to rent cars in Europe.

I don’t know that they wouldn’t learn. It’d keep them from getting in an accident on an early lesson. If anything, they’d need to learn to give it less gas without one. After they’re not stalling on any takeoffs (however many lessons that takes), you could disable it so they can get the full experience. I still wouldn’t want them to do hill start on anything too steep in traffic until they got the hang of it...

I do wish mine was adjustable for angle and that it had an indicator that it would be on from the time you come to a stop somewhere it would be engaged if you take off through the time it goes off (because the only times I’ve stalled my car were when hill assist came on when I wasn’t expecting it)...

The other alternative is to teach using the “driver examination” method, i.e. handbrake, rev, release handbrake method, which does bypass hill-assist on mine. Moment handbrake goes down, car starts rolling.

If they’re under 25, consider having them sign up for a Hagerty Driving Experience . I went to one last year and didn’t burn up any clutches, though I did stall countless times since it was my first experience of any kind. I think I did okay though considering the cars that time were all finicky, small-displacement British sports cars (mostly MG Bs). Anything with good low-end torque should make it easier.

I’ve gotten a couple of manuals from Budget in the past, but I did specifically call and ask. It’s been a couple of years, so maybe they don’t even do that any more.
