Normally don’t share these kind of stories, but this is the first time this kind of thing has happened to me and it has put a weird energy on today.

So I’ve been seeing a girl for about a month and a half and was staying over last night. For no reason I woke up at about 2 A.M. (maybe intuition??) and noticed her breathing heavily like she had just finished running or working out, but she was sleeping. I lightly grabbed her arm (she was on her side) and as I did that she let out a blood curdling scream in her sleep for a few seconds as I grabbed her harder and put her on her back to wake up. She told me that she had a dream that someone was breaking in (this is right on the edge of off campus housing where the hood starts below the hill we’re on, so not unrealistic), and then the intruder was killed on the street and the police/firemen were out there. Then, she said that there was a floating orb in the room and that I had left the room and she was picked up by the orb and was being picked up to the ceiling (it’s an old house, she has very tall ceilings). She said in her dream I was pulling her back down to safety, and the sensation of being held up and falling down made her scream. We also didn’t go to bed for about another 1-1.5 hours after this. I didn’t want to go back to sleep without her going first to make sure she was okay and she had a hard time. She still has a feeling today like something is wrong (either something is going to happen or something has happened).

Has anyone ever had this kind of experience? What could it mean? My only thought was that I’ve heard people having really vivid, weird dreams when warm in bed and it was very hot last night. I wasn’t scared per say, but replaying her scream in my mind gives me the chills. Overall just a really weird experience.

Some oppo for your time

Dreams can be weird. Nothing can scare you more than your brain.

But as a rule, I don’t touch anyone while they are asleep as the brain can react really fast to the dream and it can get horrifying really fast.

I have a touch of PTSD from my Army days, so if I have someone sleeping beside me or in the same hotel room...the rule is not to touch me if I shout out or yell as I may not be the person they know.

Dreams are often weird. Some people dream more vividly than others. I often have vivid dreams. Over the years they’ve become more of an interactive experience for me. It was weird at first but over time I’ve gotten somewhat used to it.

I still occasionally wake up with a jerk if I fall in a dream, like I feel a physical sensation of falling through the bed and then wake up with a jolt. Sometimes I talk in my sleep in a low whisper, like in the dream I’ll be trying to force out the words, and I feel myself speaking in real life, and in the dream the words make sense, but the actual words coming my mouth make no sense, according to my wife. Usually if she tells me I was talking in my sleep, I’ll remember it having happened.

Dreams can also take on elements of your daily life, at least for me. A few days ago, I saw a powder blue Ferrari California , and also read an article about president Obama, and then in a dream I met Obama who was wearing the leather jacket in picture in the article and driving both a baby blue ’57 Chevy and a baby blue Harley with flames on it, while we discussed saving healthcare behind a local pizza place.

But I know that it’s just a dream and our subconscious can come up with wacky stuff.

For someone who’s not used to dreams like this happening as often as they do for me, I certainly get how it can be worrying, but I wouldn’t worry about it.

That’s a good point. My original reason for touching her was the breathing, mainly because she has woken me up in the past because sleeping on my back can cause me to snore and not breath correctly. She just woke up when I grabbed her, and insists the screaming started before I did it, but I feel like the worst part of the dream (and the scream) was caused by me originally touching her. If it happens again I’ll not touch her and see if it works out or if I really need to intervene.

Recommend talking to her as opposed to touch. Raise your voice some, she should come outta it.
My cat lays beside me all the time and occasionally her presence makes me think something else is beside me.

I had an exgf that had night terrors. She was a sweet girl. Every night around 3:45-5:05 she would scream at the top of her lungs, heart racing, and cry. It scared the hell out of me the first few times I stayed over, but after a while they got milder or I got use to it. I am used to working long hours and doing lab reports that took forever, so the lack of sleep didn’t bother me too much.

I get really crazy dreams after a stressful week - routinely wake me up. A few months ago I had a repetitive dream that my boss, (who is largely incompetent and self serving,) was throwing all our team members off a big cruise ship into water full of sharks. One of my partners has just gone over and then my boss turns and she grabs me and tries to push me over too - then I wake up. I’ve had it enough times now it’s almost humorous after the fact...
