Can’t say I particularly love the Commander.

I’ve had both WJ and WK Grand Cherokees and while the WK was (in spite of electrical demons) objectively better, and my particular WJ was kind of a pile of crap, I’m more nostalgic for a WJ. I loved those seats! If if I found a nice rust-free lower mileage ’03-’04 WJ with the 4.7 HO and Quadra-Drive I’d be very tempted.

That’s exactly what I’ve been driving for the last three years. The power from that engine is magnificently unnecessary.

Nice, I’m a little jealous.

My WJ was a ratty ’99 with the regular 4.7 and Quadra-Trac II that I bought because I needed to do something on short notice and it was all that I could find in my town at the time. I liked it for what it was but it wasn’t worth spending the money on fixing its assorted problems.

I thought about trying to get a 4.7 HO + QD WJ but got on the WK tip instead. I had an ’05 Hemi + QDII Limited, which I liked, but having had both I think the WJ is a better expression of the original unibody Jeep formula started with the XJ.

The WK was trying to be a modern vehicle and not necessarily the most successful attempt. It also got atrocious fuel economy with the Mercedes 5-speed auto, and the jump from 4th to 5th gear was pretty huge, so trying to pass usually resulted in stomping the gas, waiting for the transmission to decide to kick down, then pissed-off NASCAR. Which I suppose was entertaining in its own way.

When I bought mine I considered a WK for a while, mostly because I wanted that Hemi engine. Then I started reading about those transmission issues, electric shifter issues, and front end issues, and that combined with the poor quality of the interior scared me off.
