Next Monday I’ll be inspecting a CRX for someone else. A supposedly pristine 1991 “CRX 1.6 16v Vtec EE8" that’s advertised for a rather steep €17k! I’ve got a long list of specific things I should check out, but if there’s anyone here who’s intimately familiar with the cars, please, inform me!

I will be able to see it on a lift.

Holy shit. 17k euro is a lot of coin for a CRX, but I doubt there’s many unmolested (stock airbox even!) 60k km CRXs left in the world.

Honda was still running pinchweld guards on the rear wheel openings, where the wheelhouse joins the outer quarter skin. All they would do is trap dirt and moisture and promote corrosion, especially at the rear of the wheel opening where the rear bumper cover fastens to the quarter. If they’re still on the car, pull them back (they just slide right on and off the pinchweld) to check for corrosion. For some reason, I have a memory of the front hinge post rotting where the door check strap (small band in between where the upper and lower door hinges mount, holds door open at certain positions) mounts as well. Of course the usual suspect spots for corrosion as well (hood edges underneath, door edges inside, hatch/decklid edges underneath).

Mechanically, the B series drivetrains were pretty bulletproof. I’m assuming that one hasn’t really been hooned or flogged on much, given it’s mileage (kilometerage?) and appearance/condition in photos. Transmission synchros used to get beat up from speed/power shifting teenagers, which should present pretty easily during a test drive.

This thing used to be on SRS Marketplace on Facebook forever. Like Rust and Dust said, rust on the rear wheelwells, undercarriage rust. I have to disagree on the synchros though. They can be troublesome, however, to actually hear them ‘scrape’, you have to properly step on it and do some proper, hard shifting.

I cant see it properly, but if it has a sunroof, check it for leaks. The B-series engines are usually bulletproof on these cars. Since its an original CRX (numbers matching? Original engine?), check for maintenance records, see if there are any irregularities (missed an oil change?).

It certainly does have a sunroof. I’ll check it. It looks like it’s a German (language) import with some booklets. It’ll be interesting to see what’s in them. I’m not going to hunt for a lacking service stamp from 1999 but it would be nice to see if the 60k kms are plausible.

Those synchros, I’m a bit of a novice here. I’m used to “stirring a pot of soup” manuals anyway, so I doubt I’ll notice much.

The syncro issue will generally present itself during the 1-2 shift under hard acceleration. Mash the throttle in first and bang second just before the fuel cutoff, (8250 rpm) and it may occasionally grind. Can also present itself while downshifting to second at slower speeds, if I recall correctly.

Based on the apparent condition and milage of that example, I probably wouldn’t expect there to be any syncro issues.

Price is insane to me though. Granted, they aren’t making any more of them and that one seems to be in excellent shape, but that’s over 24 thousand Canadian dollars you’d be pissing away. You drive it and the value will begin to plummet. You mod it and the value will plummet. Great for a museum or a hardcore Honda collector though I guess.

Give me an s2k at a fraction of the price.
