Was driving back from a dinner meeting and it was getting a bit dark outside. I drove by the dive bar district and almost ran over a guy who just popped out from between some parked cars who street parked and he didn’t even look. Just walked forward, cig in his mouth, checking his phone.
Of course, this doesn’t end with him being a pancake on the pavement. I saw him in “enough” time to recognize the other lane was clear, turned into the lane while braking and wailed on the horn. Going by the car behind me honking the horn, I figure he just sorta stood there trying to figure out how he fucked up.
So it is rather timely that I see this article on the FP (kinja is eating the link) -

YEP! Look both ways, put the phone in your pocket, and maybe consider crossing at the crosswalk instead of trying pretend a 3000lb hunk of speeding metal will yield in an instant...

I was driving my work car at my old job coming down a street that people frequently jaywalked at, so I wasn’t going fast. A couple popped out of nowhere, sprinting from the opposite side of the street. Way, way too close to me. That was probably one of my top 5 panic stops, if I was in any heavier a car I would’ve hit them. They looked genuinely shocked to see a car going down the road, and half-assedly gave a wave, before continuing across the street. I was too busy processing what just happened to respond, which is good, because I probably would’ve yelled some less than polite things at them while in a car with the company name on it....
God I hate people like that.

I called the city after I almost hit somebody. There’s a road that I don’t get a light to that is heavily traveled. I had to make a left on it. I was busy looking for headlights and when it was safe to go. I neglected to notice a pedestrian walking in the dark. Almost hit her, she was understandably angry at me.

I live in a part of town where pedestrians randomly wander into 4-lane roads and most cyclists ride at night in all black with no lights. I HATE driving at night here.

One of my sister’s childhood friends was killed about a decade ago now. She walked right into a bus that was making a turn at the corner in front of her, and got sucked under the rear wheels. She was talking on her cell phone, not paying attention.

I was riding home on the trolley (picture below) in Pittsburgh and saw someone almost get hit by crossing the tracks and not looking.
