Kinja'd!!!

The 1992 Corvette seems to have seen it’s share of amateur electrical tomfoolery. The stereo, since I purchased the car, only kinda works. Or did, rather. Now it will stay on if the volume is at a whisper. Any higher and it power cycles on and off endlessly.

The last guy wired in a sub and an amp. As he used electrical cord from a lamp for the speaker wires I figured ripping that out would solve the problem. Well it didn’t. It simply improved the problem. You could turn the stereo up slightly.

I decided to check and see if the stereo was getting good power. Maybe a plug was loose?

A plug, loose! Oh how I remember the halcyon days back before I opened up the dash.

The picture actually does it no justice. The positive lead was taped four ways to four different colored wires. All of which are tied into a ball.

I stuffed the ball back into the dash and with the same amount of professionalism as the previous owners put in one single screw to hold the dash together and went to get a drink.

I’ll tackle it tomorrow. This one will require some focus.

Sometimes the easiest (fastest) way to fix electrical like that is to rip it all out and start over.

GM Delco, circa 1986. I remember it being an $800 option when Dad bought his Celebrity. This looks like the Cadillac version (different font and knobs, otherwise identical to the Chevrolet one). Sounds okay, has that AM Stereo that everyone’s talking about... The Vette would have had a similar form factor unit with cassette and likely CD - this one:

..... I wouldn’t be shocked if the wiring was fine and the amp was toast.
