...put the gauges in their housings upside-down. I was wondering why the gauges were working backwards.

Kinja'd!!!

The gauge needles are supposed to swing along the bottom, not the top, I’ve never owned a Galaxie before so didn’t know that. A-DOY

I realize this may make me an imbecile by the commutative property, but I kinda think that sounds neat.

Kinja'd!!!

(Not mine pictured) Granted, the gauge passing through the letters of “TEMP” and “FUEL” should have been a clue. Then again, Ford crazyfuckery is hard to reckon accurately sometimes.

The little scale for the needle is on the gauge. The “E” and “F” or “C” and “H” are on the outer housing left and right - which is completely clear and leaves the scale and needle perfectly visible as if nothing was wrong - except that there are “FUEL” and “TEMP” letters over the scale. I didn’t know that was wrong either.

Somebody was on autopilot and installed the gauges needles-up. Same idjit who had the dash back in without the left signal light or hi-beams light properly in place, I’ll warrant. DERP

Gonna do something about it?

Yes, since I’ve got the cluster pulled so that I could test things anyway, and the sheer dumb has got me irritated I wasted so much time on something so simple. You know, since Ford use a version of the same gauge but subtly different for fuel and temp I’ve even had the gauges off about an hour ago to inspect them for tampering. In case somebody might have had them apart and left clues. Nope, much more stupid than that.

One of the PO’s of my e36 put the rear drive axle splines into the hub with red locktite. Those splines are held on by a bolt torqued to something like 200 lbs-ft, which is then deformed around the hub so it can’t spin, locktite isn’t doing squat for that. I had to get a machinist neighbor of mine to special make a tool for me to break the spline free.

There are times and places for friction enhancers. There?

Tell me about it. If it wasn’t for the machinist neighbor I probably would have wound up having to replace the drive axle, hub, and trailing arm. I just wanted to replace the wheel bearing.

Aaaand, I’m back. Not the hardest car in the world to work on. All electrics on the back of the dash clip on, you remove seven screws, disconnect the speedo cable, and it comes in and out. I can actually reach under the dash to disconnect the speedo cable from a sitting position in the seat.
