Kinja'd!!!

I grew an avocado tree a couple years ago from a pit after making some guacamole, and it got to the stage where it was thriving in a pot outside. Someone even tried to buy it from me.

Then, disaster. I left it out during our worst frost of this winter. It dropped all its leaves and went brown and brittle. I never gave up, though, and Groot is back! Celebrate with me.

Also, bonus embryonic Groots:

Have you ever had an avocado tree? Rats love them. They make quite a mess.

Only this one. Realistically, a long term, large tree isn’t in the cards. We’re not tropical enough here, and I don’t really have the room. I just never had the patience to do this as a kid, and I’m enjoying watching it long term.

My wife just kind shakes her head and puts up with it, like she always has with all my hair-brained ideas. My daughter is like me; today is today, and tomorrow we’ll worry about when it gets here.

Haha I rented a place in San Diego with a large avocado tree, It seemed perfect when we moved in but...turns out you can’t eat or give away hundreds of avocados before the rats come in. I have heard of some people keeping them small and growing them inside.

I think my cat would love it if the tree became rat bait. Unfortunately, it will take years before it bears fruit, and who knows where I’ll keep it then.

A big avocado tree makes you question why people like to eat them. Our neighbors in CA had a huge bass avocado tree and the mess that thing made was insane. Just rotting avocados everywhere. You can’t give them away to every house in a neighborhood fast enough to keep from wasting most of them.

Even my aunt’s avocado tree produced way too much and she kept it pruned back to a tiny size compared to what it would grow to.

Is there more to it beyond buying an avocado, making guacamole, and sticking the pit in some dirt and waiting?

A little more. You use your knife to score the side deeply. Then, you put toothpicks in the sides to suspend it mostly in water and put it in sun for several weeks. The root will grow down, and the stem will grow up from the split. When leaves finally appear, you can put it in dirt.
