Not sure if the LGBTQ rainbow sticker that I put on the back after Pulse Orlando had anything to do with it. But here we are. How much cash am I out to fix this? How much will this buff out?

You know, on Sunday night I got an irrational thought that someone was going to do that to Phil (the new smart) seeing that all it does is hog a space 24/7 (I only put like 200-300 or so miles on it a month) without licence plates, tinted windows, and an Oppo trans pride decal. Some day, some jerk is probably going to key the car while I’m at work. I bought a car cover to put on the car while I’m not driving it, hopefully that alleviates my fears.

*hugs* Nobody deserves to have their vehicle abused like that. And to be honest, I wouldn’t even be surprised if it were because the pride sticker. :(

It looks kinda bad in the photo, but you’d be surprised the magic a good paint guy/gal can work.

My car shows every one of its 30 years so I just got some touch up paint and did an, “eh, looks ok from 10 feet” job, but your car looks a lot nicer than that. Take it to a pro for an estimate, that’s my advice.

I got their spray can color match for my ZHP to repair a rust bubble, it matched the existing paint perfectly. If you are careful about the paint and hit it with a good wax afterwards, you might get lucky. And if it doesn’t come out good, its only $30.

I totally understand why you’d feel that way and go to those lengths. I’m sorry it’s our reality. :(

Yeah, back when I was in high school in the late 90s/early 00s, my car was keyed 3 different times. In addition, the gas cap got stolen off of it (it was a ‘76 Gremlin and its cap was special to the car), the windows were scratched with razor blades, and eventually someone nailed a hole in my fuel tank above the exhaust pipe. Literal nail hole.

My brother later found out that it was because a couple of assholes thought I was gay (I wouldn’t come out fully until I was 30) and literally told him they wanted me to die in a fire.

I posted a short thing about it on the FP a few years ago.

I’d like to think that society has moved on in the last 18 years. In many ways it has. Unfortunately, folks like you and I can’t take that for granted. That’s why we gotta stick together. **Hugs**

Crowmolly is on point with the body shop. Tell them what happened and most likely why - hope to god you aren’t at an anti-gay body shop - and they may give you a deal. When my first smart’s tailgate got keyed (2" scratch) a month after I got it, I got quoted $500 because they said they couldn’t blend metallic paint, so they’ll have to paint the whole panel.

With new panels only costing $150, that was a definite nope!

Hopefully with your car being black it’ll be cheap! :)

If you parked in the vicinity of local businesses that may have closed circuit cameras, then I urge you to try to get copies of that footage yourself. In my experience, for “small” crimes like this, the police aren’t going to expend officer resources to investigate it at all.

One time someone stole my debit card and racked up a shit ton of charges. Thanks to my bank statement, I could tell exactly where the thieves had used it and at what times. I filed a police report and told them that the thieves had gone to A, B, and C locations at X, Y, and Z times. These were all places with cameras. What did the cops do with this ready-made, easy-to-obtain information? Jack fucking shit.

Luckily my bank didn’t hold me accountable for any of the charges, but it sucked being completely broke for a couple of days while they restored my account and erased the overdraft fees. Sucked even worse knowing the cops didn’t care.

Check with your carrier, theft and vandalism may fall under uninsured motorist or comprehensive. They usually have lower deductible costs, and don’t count against your premium rates.

The legislation and rules should vary from state to state or province to province; in Ontario, there is no fault to be assigned in the case of a vandalism claim (well, fault in terms of drivers, whoever did this is a massive cunt and it’s definitely their fault) and as a result there would be no premium increase or impact to your driver rating. Still, the $500 deductible means the repair bill would have to be significant for a claim to even be a consideration.

That statement has never been truer today. I’m beginning to get a bit pessimistic myself. Looking at polling for LGBTQ issues (of course, the most recent being these horrid restroom laws) doesn’t paint a hopeful picture and shows that our acceptance is still a bipartisan issue. It’s like, even the most comprehensive and pro-trans surveys are still pretty bad . Aggregating all the polls, it’s something like only 60% of Democrats support us, and that’s our highest political support. :’(

I guess I’ll never understand what drives people to hate.

The most likely reason isn’t so inexplicable. Many people have this terrible attitude that if they have nothing nice, then no one else may have anything nice either. Rather than working hard to get themselves nice things, they feel the need to deprive others.

The sort of idiots who think it is okay to go around keying cars don’t think logically about that. They only see the Porsche badge and think you must be a wealthy jerk who can flaunt his extravagant “luxury” car.

A person who chooses to drive a 20+ year old Porsche or Mercedes or BMW is assumed by many to be rich because there is no understanding that such a car might be worth only a few thousand bucks. Those brand names are associated with huge dollars in the minds of much of the public.
