I could buy a PC for that much. Not a good one, but still.

Do they also offer services to assist my brand new car in the break-in process?

You might be able to buy a Windows XP box.

No in-home service goes down for less than $100. Most of the people that are buying a new mac and want to pay to have it setup need more than an hour of help anyway. I’m $150/hour and with my clients that need this ultra basic level of help, I’ll be there for two.

Yup, Staples.

That’s an extra $50. However for an additional $100/hr, I will not only set up and turn on your Mac, I’ll operate it for you as well.

If you’re paying that much for an XP box these days...

Okay, deal. Then I’ll have my hands free while I stand behind you. But I get to pick the web sites.

Also, bring an apron.

Laugh all you want, but my 70 year old mother would pay this fee and I would gladly let her so that I don’t have to set it up.

This is just capitalizing on the vast number of people who still don’t know how to use computers.

I’m designated tech support for my mother-in-law. She basically uses her computer to play online poker and bridge, plus email, printing coupons, and occasionally facebook stalking people.

She had this old-ass Windows XP machine that was on its very last legs that I was keeping going with regular disk defragging and registry cleaning. I tried to get her to switch to a Chromebook but she didn’t want to get a laptop. I sold her on a Chromebase, but the new-at-the-time Acer Chromebase 24 wasn’t out yet. I told her it was better than the readily available 21" Chromebases, and to hang on until it came out.

But the next time we visited her, she had some not-very-new Windows 7 machine some random local computer guy had set up for her, hooked up to her old-ass grainy 17" 4:3 LCD monitor.

I’ve already had to do a bunch of fixing it. I should probably put TeamViewer on it the next time I’m there, but at the very least I have the password to her email.

Ugh.

I hate taking these gigs. Sometimes I’m in a data center, and sometimes I’m in Grandma’s living room. Either way I’m $150/hour when I’m consulting and that almost isn’t enough for these types of jobs.

My mother and my sister both go to the dealership for everything about their cars. Even TPMS lights.

I’m glad they do. That’s two less cars I need to worry about falling apart.

Whenever I walk in the door to the inlaws there’s usually a pile of tablets and phones and laptops that need “fixed”. I fake getting stumped often or run off to make sure my kid isn’t up to no good.

I wish someone ANYONE in my family was good at either cars or computers.

While I’m proud of the fact that I’m good at both, c’mon.... Why am I the best at both of them?

Yeah my 10 year younger BIL fakes that he doesn’t know how to fix their gadgets and network issues when he went through public school using iPads and took several district mandated coding classes.
