I’m really looking forward to this movie, and I don’t know a thing about the graphic novel. I just like Luc Besson movies, and this looks amazing. Of course, Ishtar probably looked good in the trailer.

I love Luc Besson and sci-fi, so yeah, I’m in.

I remember seeing some teasers for this a while back. It seemed like a long time ago. But it was “only” last November. I suppose that’s 4 months now...

A thousand planets sounds like a thousand different emissions standards.

From this trailer, I can’t tell how seriously to take the movie.   Fifth Element worked because it had a tongue in cheek feel about it. This movie looks like it’s trying to feel visually similar, but the tone will make or break it.

This shot just makes me feel all funny inside. Besson gets it.

I can’t wait, it looks to be a pretty great space epic.

This is one of my favorite stills from the new trailer. It’s 100% classic sci-fi art, suitable for framing. Absolute classic. I think that Besson has a way of stringing these sorts of iconic sci-fi images together in a way that makes anybody who has looked longingly at sci-fi/fantasy art instantly feel at home.

Whether or not the story serves those images is anybody’s guess, and I suppose that is what you are getting at. Yes, Fifth Element had a great feel to it, the cast worked well together, the story was good (at least I liked it). I also really dug the steampunk feel of it. If Valerian can manage all that without trying to take itself too seriously, then it should be awesome. Hopefully, though, it doesn’t get too busy. CG is great, but it’s like any seasoning—too much is too much. Just ask George Lucas.

Yeah, I agree. The imagery is great.

Do I lose nerd cred when I say I haven’t watched Rogue One yet but I will definitely make time to see this?

Not at all. They are entirely different movies. That said, you really should see Rogue One . It’s really good, especially the ending. In fact, I liked it significantly more than The Force Awakens .

I will see it, it will just be at home. Having a baby makes going to movies something where we have to really want to see the movie to go through the trouble of setting up babysitting, my wife isn’t a fan of star wars so I just never went.

After our kids are now 11, 11 and 14, and my wife and I haven’t been to a movie by ourselves in 14 years. We’ve seen all the kids movies, all the super hero movies (which we’re fans of anyway), but an adult movie? Nope.
