Kinja'd!!!

This jamoke was behind me the other day. It was snowing lightly.

LED bar lights =/= fog lights. Also not foggy out.

I run all my lights at all times to be more visible. They are not aftermarket LED-burn-your-corneas-out bright. Stock lights.

I forget about the rules in the US, but in Canada all cars since something like ‘93 are required to come with Daytime Running lights, so there are lights on at the front of your car at all times whether you have your lights TURNED on or not. (I think the US might require them now, but can’t remember....I know you didn’t have them for longer than we did I don’t think?)

To that end, I only ever turn on my LIGHT lights in poor weather or at dawn/dusk to be more visible, or obviously at night as turning them on brightens my front lights and turns on the rears.

I might also be getting old, but some of the LED brake lights on some Camrys are blinding. It defeats the purpose of the brake light. It’s there to make me aware car in front of me is stopping. If it blinds me, I can no longer see it.

UGH!!! Idiots as far as the eyes can see...both drivers with light bars and car manufacturers

So... on that note, I’ve always wanted some way to tell cars behind me that they have, for example, their high beams on (or stupid bar lights). I’ve never quite gone so far as to install some kind of rear-facing spotlight, BUT my ‘61 truck didn’t come with factory reverse lights, so it has two rear spotlights installed for that purpose. They may be old, but they are bright. And they are run off a switch on the dash. I am just WAITING for someone behind me like this, for me to flash my rear spotlights until they get it. I can’t wait.

Where do you think you’re gonna put a tree that big?

Bend over and I’ll show you!

How dare you talk to me like that!

I wasn’t talking to you, I was talking to your wife.

Fog lights ok. LED bar lights not ok.

yeah, but that’s what normal lights are for. OK, fog lights, too. Sure. But those LED bars are not for on-road use with other cars around. Made me wish I was in my ‘61 Ford which has reverse lights that operate only by a switch on the dash. I could have flashed them at him until he figured it out.

During the daytime this wasn’t that bad, I must admit, but it still bugs me.

In the old days, if your headlights were off your instruments would not be illuminated, and this seems like a great idea and may even have been the law. But with today’s fancy instrument lighting, the gauges have to be illuminated at all times, and this removes an important cue. The very night I picked up my Mazda from the dealer I was pulled over for driving without my lights on because I saw the illuminated instruments and (mistakenly) assumed that the headlights were on. Nowadays I just automatically turn on the headlights anytime I’m driving to prevent a recurrence of this same problem.

I’m not the only one that has this same problem with lights. I’ve seen lots of people in newer cars also driving without their lights on, and most attempts to alert them have been fruitless. I did get next to one guy at a light and had him roll down his window so I could tell him; he was quite thankful, but WTF did he think I was doing for the last mile when I was trying to alert him? People are clueless...

Headlights ok. Especially when they’re automatic. I haven’t touched the headlight switch in my car in months. But those stupid LED bars are NOT for normal driving use... at night it would have been far worse, of course.

This x1000. I’ve been ticketed for that very thing, in a friend’s car. I see people all the time with half-bright lights in front (DRLs) and nothing in the rear. A friend drove a rental car for over 2 hours at night on the highway like this. I figured it out when he complained he couldn’t figure out how to get the high beams to stay on. How long will it take for DRL regulations to just apply to the normal lights?! Why have a separate, but completely unsafe and misleading setup in the name of SAFETY?

Thankfully I didn’t get a ticket, and actually spent about 30 minutes chatting with the cop after showing him the paperwork that indicated that I had just purchased the car a few hours ago. I was new to the area and he gave me some tips and heads ups on some of the legal differences between my old and new states. Very good information to have, and things I might not have picked up on just by reading the driver’s handbook.

In aviation we have the ‘dark cockpit’ philosophy, which states that there should be no warning lights illuminated if everything is operating normally. But I have to drive my car with a stupid green light staring me in the face because I have my headlights on at night, the time when it’s normal to have them on. Well, duh. With all of the electronics and sensors in today’s vehicles, how about we configure it to give me a red light if it’s dark and I don’t have my headlights on, which is the abnormal situation, and save me from having to look at that dumb light when things are operating as they should.

My headlights aren’t auto, I just like to have them on. I think it really does help other drivers to be able to see me.

I agree that those light bars are pretty goofy. I can understand them for off road use, or if you have a long private drive, etc. But using them on the road is kind of silly. I have seen large pickups with those things on during my commute to work on the Beltway around DC.

I wish my truck had that green light to indicate when the headlights are on. The IP lights automagically dim based on a light sensor, but just because the panel lights are dim doesn’t necessarily mean the headlights are on. If it’s a snowy day it is usually too bright to turn on the headlights, but may be dark enough to dim the panel lights. The only way to verify that the lights are on is to tip your head awkwardly to verify that you did indeed turn the lights from auto to on.

Cops should be able to cut the wires on light bars if they pull someone over who is running those on the road. I absolutely hate those. As an added bonus the OTR trucks have started running those and the stupid fuckers don’t mind blinding everyone else on the road. Just what I want, an 80,000 pound truck bearing down on me with an LED light bar blinding me so that I have no idea where the road is while I’m trying to avoid getting crushed.
