Might not get to AutoX this weekend. I’m pretty livid right now. (rant)

Kinja'd!!!

Apparently my grandma called my mom and asked if my sister and I could come to her house this weekend. No explanation of why. This is complicated by the fact that my mom and uncles intended to call my grandma this weekend and tell her that she’s moving to an assisted living apartment in 2 weeks (her dementia is rapidly getting very bad).

My sister is an elementary teacher (read: patience level over 9000) so she does very well with her, I don’t. I get frustrated, I know it’s not her fault so I have internalize the frustration, which just combines with the emotional disaster that is seeing someone you love’s mind slipping away. It absolutely wrecks me, but it’s my grandma.

Basically, I won’t say no. Which means the $1000 worth of tires and brakes I finally pulled the trigger on won’t get put on the car or used this week, and I may well miss the next event because of a tux fitting for my friends’ wedding.

Life can just fuck the hell off right now.

It sucks, but “you do for family”.

I’m in a similar boat. There’s an event saturday I could go to, but no, my youngest daughter has a birthday party (on not her birthday) and wants dad there. Then my parents are moving 1500+ miles to be closer to me and their grandkids, and conveniently planned this to intersect with the next possible Auto-X date on my calendar.I’ve already got the $1000+ dollars worth of suspension upgrades done and one event down, but ROI gets better with more events...

You’re time is limited with your grandma. Fuck your tires and brakes.

Exactly, I’m not mad at her nor would I think twice about going, just mad at the situation.

my grandmother has mis-recognized me multiple times this year and spent about an hour on sunday telling me how she has to call 2 of her brothers ( who have been dead for about 15 years). I would say try to get as many conversations in as you can, before she isn’t able to communicate any more.

Yep, she’s not at that point yet, just constantly lost/confused about what’s going on. She’s in good health physically but that could change rapidly if she forgets to take care of herself.

Get as much quality time as possible. It is frustrating, but this is the best time you will have with her.

The truth is that it’s not. That sounds shitty, but in all reality it’s the sad truth. The best time has passed, I will always cherish it, and I won’t let that affect the time we have left.

Loved ones slipping away like that before they actually die is rough. I had four sets of grandparents (adoption and remarriages, long story), and 2 of them were gone mentally before they died, due to dementia, and 1 due to multiple strokes. The last one alive is showing the early signs of alzheimers. I’m sorry for your situation, I can definitely relate.

Word. At least you had quality time in the past. I just meant that unfortunately, it only does further downhill.

That sucks. I’d be frustrated too. Remember though, there will be lots of auto crosses, but just the one grandmother (well, maybe you have two, but just one of that one).

Also, tux-fitting? Is this some kind of event now? Every wedding I was in, you just showed up whenever before a certain date, they measured you up, and went on your merry damn way. Took like 12 minutes.

I know what you mean there. When my wife’s mom passed last year, she was sad but not really as wrecked as one might expect. The reason was the version of her mom that had raised her had been gone for years. I will say that it’s still important to see them and spend time with them. I had to push my wife do do that, and in the end she was glad that she did.

You can go to any tux shop, have them measure you, and then send it in. Most will do it for free, some charge a nominal fee. I was once in a wedding in DC, I’m in Chicago. I only spent approximately 30 hours in DC start to finish.

Yeah, they’re kinda trying to make it an event. It’s cool with me, I’ll try to get back in time to go run on Sunday.
