Did you ever enjoy a key?

I think a sign of my middle age is my love for traditional keys. The shittiest car I ever owned (1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Salon burn in hell) had 2 GM keys - ignition and doors/trunk, as some of you Oppos may remember. That car had a gas cap behind a pull down rear license plate, which was its only redeeming feature.

Keys were a part of brand identity. With GM, you got the round and square keys with teeth on only one side. Toyota gave you one triangular master key that opened everything.

I love my Vespa key - It was one of the first to use a microchip security system. It also just looks cool.

The blue key must be programmed by the red key. I did not know this when I bought mine and the owner lost the red key.

And so I can close with a bit of heartbreak, a gift from my wife awaiting a key post-restoration.

Do you dig your key? Post it.

the ‘switch blade’ key/fob unit that some of the newer Mazdas have is pretty cool

I like the fintail’s key, it is big and a little strange looking:

The modern car’s key at right just sits in my pocket and is seldom seen - MB has used a similar design for about 20 years now.

My 93 Corvette uses two keys for the doors and ignition, and it has passive keyless entry via the fob. I never thought the first car I owned that automatically locks and unlock when I approach or leave it would be 24 years old. The PEK fob gets a piece of tape since a tab broke on it last time I changed the battery, and replacement fobs are around $250 from the corvette restoration parts houses.

My favorite key is the one for my old integra racecar. I’ve always dug the red lettering. I’ve also had this key since I was 15.

I am astounded that I haven’t broken my Volvo’s switchblade key after 14 years of fidgeting with it. Definitely the way to go (aside from the fact many new cars just do the proximity fob thing).

I glued two pieces of wood to the key for my 240D. Shaped, sanded, stained and a few coats of poly later:

I love my old keys. ‘73 CL450 and gas and ignition key for my ‘66 GMC. My Corvair and GMC keys worked in both ignitions.

The only key to Crusty’s heart. It had plastic on it at one point. I do dig old Ford keys.

I love my Jag’s Tibbe keys more than I ever thought it was possible to love a key. They’re just so different that they feel special. They were actually first used on the Merkur, and to the best of my knowledge, only ever used on those, Jags, and Transit vans.

Cool random fact: Any Tibbe key can be used to lock any Tibbe lock, because the locks are a series of spinning cylinders, so lock doesn’t require any pins to be pushed into place first.

Yes. I love my Sprite’s keys. Came from the owner in the leather key wallet. I’ll have to find them to take a picture. Similar to this, but black
