Last spring I asked about a sunroof issue for him and Oppo nailed the cause, so lets see what ideas you come up with for this issue.

Car seems to be consuming oil, ending up around a quart low at the service interval.

No Codes, no visible leaks or signs of underneath or on the block, no change in driving behavior and no intrusion into coolant.

He has owned it since new and I trust his ability to turn a wrench as he is rebuilding a 9-3, might be a Viggen I’m not sure, as a project.

The car is between 7 and 12 years old, it probably has north of 100,000 miles and what service interval does he go by? If it is BMWs 7500 mile recommendation that’s not a lot a lot of oil burn and probably just some moderately worn rings.

those V10s do like to consume oil, id change it and send it off to be analysed, as it COULD mean rod bearings are becoming mean

That seems perfectly normal to me, but I don’t know shit about V 10 BMW’s.

It’s an S85, they tend to burn oil. My S65 burned a quart before my last service.

Have him send oil to blackstone for analysis. Seems normal to me.

Original rod bearings?

I’m going to grab the contents of this thread and talk to him about it tomorrow, I have no idea.

This is a quote I just pulled from the factory bulletin, SI B11 03 13:

: OIL CONSUMPTION SPECIFICATION

All BMW engines (excluding Motorsport) can consume up to 1 quart of engine oil per 750 miles at any time.

Due to the increased engine power, all Motorsport engines can consume up to 2.5 quarts of engine oil per 1,000 miles at any time.

If it only uses a quart between services, he should buy a lottery ticket, especially if he’s on BMW’s 10,000 interval, which is a bad idea. Seriously, that’s astonishing. I assume he’s using the correct 10w60 oil?

Speaking of things E60 M5s consume, if his car does not consume a significant portion of its value annually on repairs, he should also buy a lottery ticket.

IMO this seems pretty normal for an M, especially if he’s at higher mileage. Wouldnt worry too much.

What. I’m troubled it’s not burning more!

Seriously though it’s his gas. Trust me. E60 M5 owner here. The change between winter and summer fuel blends causes the knock point to change in the cylinder and there will be more blowby in the summer than the winter. Or vice versa. It has nothing to do with anything being wrong.

My engine needs a quart about every 1,000 miles and Blackstone says my engine is in great shape.

He could also be buying a lower grade due to his gas station being shady. If it’s real bad he’ll get an increased emissions alert but if it’s, say, 89 octane it won’t.

Neither of these things are M5 specific but it’s highly pronounced in such a high strung car.

Cheers.
