You know those tacticool monochrome American flags that people put on their trucks?

Kinja'd!!!

Today I saw that, except it was fashioned into either a hood, maybe some kind knight’s helmet, or a lucha libre mask. Something tells me that it’s not the last one, so I rather suspect that this guy is kiiiiind of not a nice person.

I saw one yesterday where the flag was mirrored. It was on a body panel so it’s not like they put it on the inside of the window.

It’s a spartan helmet, usually accompanied by the phrase MOLON LABE, which means “come and take it”, and was what Leonidas said to Xerxes (allegedly) at the battle of the 300

It’s a military/gun rights/MURRKA thing

Oh, d’oh. I was wondering why it looked familiar.

From a distance, with my eyesight, I genuinely thought it was a klan hood at first.

It’s supposed to be a stylized Corinthian helmet used by hoplites of various ancient Greek city states (including Sparta, of which it has been incorrectly attributed to by many) that’s been co-opted by popular culture icons ranging from the Mandalorians/Clone Troopers of Star Wars to the Spartans of 300.

It’s been recently appropriated as a tacticool icon mostly by Tier 1 broforce operators who want to brazenly display their freedom boner after watching 300 too many times.

It’s a Thin Blue Line supporter thing too, because conflating the idea of what a police officer is, and what a warrior/soldier is, is always healthy.

ETA: If the stripes on the flag represent the thirteen original colonies, doesn’t putting a line between half of them basically make it the mason dixon line?

Wow ... seeing all the replies on this one, the guy (or gal) may or may not be a right-wing nut-bro. You can’t complain about stereotypes if you abuse them as well. It would be like me saying you’re a bunch of coddled sissyfied hipsters whose girlfriends peg them on a regular basis with a curated collection of organic/non-gmo dildos.

That’s probably because the owner of that vehicle and sticker is a right wing nut bro who has no real knowledge of the meaning that sticker is supposed to embody. I would love to be proven wrong, but experience tells me otherwise.

Besides most gun owners I know don’t really like to advertise that fact because its rather pompous behavior. Speak softly and carry a big stick.

This came up in discussion in my personal life yesterday. It is my opinion *warning hot take* that its not cool to change the colors of the US flag and the prominently display said bastardization on your vehicle.

I mean, I love America and the flag, but all that color is for chicks. If IS gets to have a black and white flag, why doesn’t America?

Hey man. It’s not like we’re on track to be some weird combo plutocracy/theocracy where the rights of women and minorities are an after-after thought.

Wait.

Was it on the passenger side?

It’s proper to “let the stars lead” in the direction of travel when showing a flag on a vehicle. Think about a flag on the mast of a moving ship - the stars will always be closest to the mast, and thus will always lead in the direction of travel.

You’ll even see that the flag on the right shoulder of some military uniforms is mirrored as well (since we mostly move forward).

For a stationary flag, the stars should always be in the upper left. If you hang the flag vertically, this means you effectively have to mirror the flag’s horizontal (traditional) layout.

There’s all kind of messages on that sticker depending on how you look at it ... but I bet the person got it because it “looked cool”.
