It might be heavily depreciated, but it ain’t cheap to fix. There are rebuild options that would save money, but this was a time-sensitive repair so they went with a new one. Seize the carp, as they say.

why didn;t they make it 6 pairs instead of a single 5 pairs and a single?

that is the most German thing I’ve seen today. I’m sure they were so desperate for cost savings on a V12 Benz where it made sense to throw away 6/12 ignition coils all at once.

it actually is 6 pairs; the wider-spaced ones are for each cylinder.

Does that go in the center of the V? I’m trying to picture how that works. I guessed it would have had one pack for each bank.

I think if I went V12, it would be a W140 or maybe a 2010+ car. Everything in the middle seems to be a disaster on wheels.

Somehow I think that’s covered under “time sensitive repair” and also the whole “repair that costs so much part cost has stopped even being a number”. Like, they were okay spending $400 more for a that-day fix when their angus was already that peppered.

Time sensitive. We offered other options, but the owner was stranded here from out of town and the OEM unit was most expedient. Also I can’t properly warranty parts from generic internet vendors.

One for each bank, in the center of the valve covers.

So you’re saying there’s a market for hoarding V12 coil packs to sell to desperate drivers.

03/29/2017 at 15:42, STARS: 3

It’s definitely not impossible. Step one is probably finding some way to trick more people into buying them to increase the market, though. Classic market prep... wait is this what the plan of oppo was all along

is this a v12 conspiracy

are the mods going to get rich selling coil packs

is this real life

The thing is, this V12 and its engine management was totally different than any other engine then in their lineup at the time, so it couldn’t share the individual coils those engines had, and add in the turbos and plumbing and there’s no room elsewhere. Still, for what these cars went for, it is surprising they didn’t come up with a better solution.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

You obviously don’t need to watch that, but I included that for reference, it doesn’t look that bad of a job. Also when talking about socket sizes do you actually say 8-m-m or 8 millimeter? I’ve never heard it said 10-m-m like that, but I’m not around people who use those terms on a daily basis.

Is that some sort of piston ring bracelet? I’m not into fashion or jewelry but that looks like a bad idea to keep on while being a mechanic.

YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT DRIVING YOUR DECADE OLD SPACESHIP IS PRICELESS!

This is why I try not to take mine too far out of town. If I’m paying $1,500 in parts, I’ll just have both sides rebuilt at once and not ever have to worry for...well...60,000 mile shelf life...

True story. We’ve got a W140 S600 in here too at the moment, and while there are several problems with those cars, the engine is generally not one of them. This R230 though, this V12 is sort of a bastardized, barely recognizable cousin of the old one, ruined by all the stuff added on to win the dick swinging contest and stuffed into a car it should never have been in.

Looks like that replacement is a near-perfect fit but it’s gonna restrict your airflow, I’ll bet. You probably need to get one of these to make up the difference:

I can believe it. Any horror story from an oughts-era V12 is within the realm of possibility. Early W220 S600 is a car I wouldn’t take for free.

W140s are really growing on me though. The indy mechanic I patronize for the fintail rescured a 600SEL - bought it for peanuts, got it back on the road and apparently doesn’t have much trouble with it now. He might have had to do a wiring harness. A lot less to go wrong in those cars I guess.

Haha, I’ve never heard anybody who actually uses or works with the metric system say “m-m”. But most guys who have time to make Youtube wrenching videos like this aren’t professionals. And if those are piston rings on his arm, I agree that’s a bad idea, and nobody I’ve ever met in the industry would wear them.
