So my landlord decided to sell the house I’m living in. Its not gonna be an issue with the lease and I wasnt going to be living there next year anyways. But I like the aspect of not having just 24 hour notice whenever people want to come over, most likely often, since the place is in a pretty hot market.

Plus three college aged guys dont live the most realtor friendly lifestyle. Lets see how that goes over...

Have a car for relevance.

last house i lived in was a 4 year old passed down lease and dozens of college kids had lived there and left their shit over the years. we told the landlord if they wanted it cleaned to find the next prospective tenants they needed to either find a cleaner ($$$$) or we’d do it for free rent.

We rented a u-haul the next weekend and had it done in two days.

Depending on where you live you can totally demand more time (last apartment I asked for 48 hours notice because I was working 12 hours a day) or rent to be lessened because they’re impeding on your ability to comfortably live there. If they don’t like it you can always change the locks on them.

Had a friend this happened to. They brokered a deal with the owner that the house could only be showed three days a week, the guys would generally try to keep things picked up and tidy, and (here’s the best part) the owner would send in a maid at the beginning of each week to do a thorough cleaning in prep for that week’s showings. Unfortunately, the house sold in two weeks so they didn’t get as much benefit from the deal as they thought they would. But something for you to think about!

I feel your pain...or rather my renter will. I am selling my place this summer and his lease is up in july so that means he will be hosting an agent a lot. It sucks and I don’t want to do it...but I don’t want to keep the place anymore and summer is the hot time to sell so....

make sure there is like half a sheet of toilet paper in any bathroom at any time during a showing.

Check your lease. There may be restrictions on how they can show the apartment (if they can do so at all). If not, then at least look for that with your next lease (where I’ve been, they are generally only allowed to enter for emergency maintenance, or with significant advanced notice.) Big buildings seem to be better about it than smaller places as small time landlords often feel that they own the building and so they trump any tenant’s rights, which is definitely not true.

On the other hand, my tenants just gave me less than 2 weeks notice that they are leaving. And I doubt they are paying last months rent, and they are likely leaving the house trashed.

Never rent to or from family. I wonder if they will be coming to Easter gtg at our house. This weekend will be interesting.

In our case I think they want out of this specific one because the house its costing them a lot. It was built in the teens so there is always something up. Just since august they have had to reseal the tub and tiles, re-drywall the ceiling in both the kitchen and the bathroom, replace three windows, and deal with semi-large plumbing work in both the kitchen and the bathroom, and on top of that there is still other stuff that needs to be fixed too.

for me Im just tired of being a landlord. I only became one to retain some of the value in the home through the housing crash.

Hell, any money tied obligations with family should be avoided.

I have this current situation as well. I had it worse when I was in Maryland as my landlord there was a HUGE POS that perfectly explains my opinion on Maryland as a whole. She’d give me like 2 hour notice (while I was at work). I’d tell her to F off a few times.

My current landlord is a good guy, but way too eager to sell the place. They want to have an open house every weekend at like 9am to 4pm. I finally had to go, “Ok, look...when do I get to have a weekend where I can just sleep in and do chores? I work all week and then one day on the weekend I lose half a day so people can parade through my place?”

I built into the lease if he sells it then I get 2 months (rent free) to find a new place and my deposit back. So it is in my interest to help, but damn...I’d like a lazy day please.

Yes, learning from past mistakes so I don’t make them again. It should be over this year.
