Kinja'd!!!

In Hong Kong, unlike most places, you don’t get your plates from the government. Instead, you get them made for you, usually by a garage.

The things you learn from Wikipedia.

Now I want to play Sleeping Dogs.

Isn’t England the same way? Which would explain why HK is that way.

I’ve got absolutely no idea. I guess I’ve never given it any thought.

Some other facts:

- Plate numbers are a tradeable commodity, you’ll regularly see ads in the papers selling numbers, especially sequences with 8s in them. As opposed to the UK system, it’s assigned to regions and age of the car (I think).

- Up until a few years ago, you can’t have customized plates. Even now, you can’t just walk into the Transport Department and just apply for them. Once you apply for them, it has to go through a public auction, and you have to buy it from there.

Fun Hong Kong fact: Hong Kong is my favorite city in the world. I’ve never met anyone who spent any significant amount of time there who likes it as much as I do, and they usually think I’m weird and/or hate it, but I don’t care. I’ve spent a lot of time in strange cities getting disastrously drunk, but Hong Kong is just special.

I’m actually in the process of figuring out whether I can justify going for a few weeks once things calm down at work.

I’ve always loved HK too. It all seems so futuristic in a way. That, and kung fu movies.

Same here in India!

You just do to license plate guys who make whatever you want in any wacky design. I’m sure there are guidelines for license plates, but no one here cares lol

Roughly the same idea. The dealer or a licensed private shop makes the plates. They must meet the government specs, which the UK has since tightened after Hong Kong went back to China.

HK still uses BS 145a, which lets car buyers have *some* freedom in determining how they want the plate to look.

UK uses BS 145d which is much stricter with fonts and sizes--you’re pretty much stuck, and the only choice you get is whether you want that GB Euro bar. Can you even get that anymore after Brexit??

Ye’, the only exception is JDM cars where the licence plate recess is smaller, that your allowed a very slight smaller size font from the standard size Charles Wright font.

And ye’, the E.U. Band is optional only in the U.K., where it’s mandatory in the rest of the E.U. If we visit the continent with our car we must display a ‘G.B.’ badge, sticker or plate on the rear though as well as put headlight beam converters on the headlights so as not to dazzle other roads users.

Japan is much more organized and modern, I thought Shanghai was the only city that was sort of like that. I much prefer Japan, I never need to go back to China. People in Japan help everyone and China is like fuck y’all I’m doing what I want even if i screw over a thousand people. I drove across China and Tibet, I saw three motorcyclists that were hit and they just cover them up by the road with the bike and leave. Not even in chaotic India have I seen that.

You can buy and sell licence plates in the U.K. also.

The only rule is no profanity and you can’t put a licence plate on a car that will make it look younger than it is.

Such as if you have a car registered in 2001, you can’t put this plate on it:-

Kinja'd!!!

Because the licence plate is a ‘53 plate’ and so was registered on or after the 1st of September 2003 but before the 1st of March (not inclusive) of 2004.

The best site I’ve used in the past for colleagues and neighbours is regtransfers.co.uk. So easy to use and everything to explained and up front.

That’s what’s done where I am. Is having your plates sent to you by a government agency rather than made by the local motor factor  common?

Futuristic, but also amazing how the glitziness of HK Island contrasts with the dirty sketchiness of Kowloon at night.

Also, totally. I’m a big jazz fan, and Hong Kong has a great jazz scene, so I was constantly like “yessssss, Chow Yun-fat could bust in at any moment and shoot this place up in slow motion!”

I lived there for fifteen years. It’s hard to not be fond of a place after that amount of time there.

The array of respiritory diseases it gave me, I’m less thrilled with. But I’d still go back there if I could.
