I think 5 episodes so far. I bought my wife a 4K LCD smart TV to replace our old CRT (I think we may have been the last hold out in North America), and since we have Amazon Prime, I decided to watch. Anyway, my review after the jump.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s Top Gear.

Yeah it’s Jezza, Capt Slow and Hamster just making a TG without the Beeb to tell them what to do.

Yep, and that’s no bad thing. I had just wondered if they would take the opportunity to add something different and stretch their wings once freed from their shackles. But nope. They’re still masters at what they do, though.

They might, I’m sure they will look at what people say. I would like more specials.

What are your thoughts on the upgrade?

I like the specials, but I like the regular episodes more because it mixes things up. The specials might be more interesting if they departed from the regular “the producers told us to buy three [insert car type here] and report to [insert location here] for [insert mission here].”

If they only have specials then they wouldn’t be special. It would just be  a new  show.

I like it. It’s all just a little bit more grand and unconstrained. I wouldn’t mind a bit more imagination, you know, trying out something new on us now that they have the freedom.

Not only specials, but one during the season and then an Xmas special in between would be good.

Ah yes but they have to have everyone on board first. Just like you were holding out, there are still lots of people who still own CRTs and many of them don’t see a difference when they see HD content. I think it’s going to take a bit more time.

My thoughts exactly. Two main differences between TGT and TG for me though.

1. Higher production value, so it looks a LOT prettier. TG was pretty, but TGT is on another level visually.

2. The in-car cameras are a bit closer, which is a but unsettling when you first watch it.

That’s it. I don’t really know why people expected it to be anything but Top Gear 2.0. And that’s not a bad thing at all.

We’ve got one of those 40 inch crt flat screens that weighs no joke 500lbs not including the base hefty enough to support it. Sometimes the picture goes out and you just wack the top, and it’s fine.

It was top of the line in 1999. Its our Xbox TV in the basement now.

LOL, I though you were talking about the show. You meant the TV. Sorry. Honestly, the two biggest benefits are 1) the increased size of the screen so my wife can see her college football from farther away, and 2) the apps that allow us to seamlessly get to Netflix and amazon This will likely be the last step to cutting the cord. The resolution of the tv is nice, but I find the brain puts itself in the story and quickly ignores resolution the same way you don’t see individual frames in a film.

It worked and I felt like a God.
