My wife wants a different family vehicle, so we went to a reputable, local Toyota dealership.

Looked at a 2015 certified used Highlander. After 2.5 hours of attempted negotiations, I walked because they only came down $300 on the list price.

The salesman was insistent that the used car business has changed, and that the price is the price nowadays.

Can anybody who works in the business and/or has recently bought a Toyota chime in? Is this true? Sounded like fluff to me.

Maybe they’re taking on the Scion method of no negotiations?

I would visit a different dealership and try again. I walked into an Audi dealership with my buddy and they knocked 1000 off a 2 year old Merc without thinking.

It depends. Some places do one-price, no negotiations, and some do not.

Check out Carvana - I’ve been window shopping them recently and the site is set up so that you don’t need to deal with a person at any point in the transaction. Just the way it should be.

There can be only one price!

Nah, that’s just how much the Mercedes depreciated while they were looking it over.

Yeah, I get that but this place doesn’t advertise that way.... he would have saved us both a lot of time if he had told me up front.

Yeah, I don’t know... they don’t advertise like that (like CarMax or something).

I took me like a month to get the dealer to come down to a reasonable price on my 328i.

My 2012 RAV4 I have now and my dad’s 2015 Scion xB were both purchased new at a Toyota dealer. We had USAA for the RAV and Costco (let’s not get started) for the xB. For both cars, I’m pretty sure my parents got four grand or so off of MSRP. To get a perspective of how USAA discounts, check out TrueCar; it’s pretty much the same as USAA’s car buying service.

Yes, this has always been my experience. The last four cars I bought - $4k off, $5k off, $10k off (got lucky), $5k off.

You might have the best luck going new or leasing. Buying a loaded up RAV4 is like $35 grand before discounts, but you get all of those safety cameras and stuff. It may be well worth it. Newer RAV4s are much better passenger cars than my third gen.

Unfortunately that model year highlander is just one of those cars that they know they will sell to someone else in the next 30 days for within $200 of asking price. No need to cut the price like they would on say a 2105 Explorer to move it. It’s like trying to get money off a new 4 Runner or new Honda CR-V.

Most Scion dealerships were like Carmax is that their was a no-negotiation process, the price on the sticker was the price you paid.

sounds about right. For one there isn’t as much money in used cars these days, and certification adds to their costs. With the internet dealers have to be aggressive with pricing and show what usually is their best number up front since so many others do. Some places list high, but most places these days are showing their out the door price pretty close on the sticker.

I did work for a Honda dealer that did no negotiation pricing. I bought a few cars from them and I got the employee price...$500 off.
