Kinja'd!!!

So I think my group 34 AMG is toast. Its voltage is a little low, even after a desulfate and charge, but worse than that I feel like I the capacity just isn’t there anymore. even after a full charge I don’t get more than a few hours running a fridge at less than 2 amps/hr.

From reading into it it sounds like AGM batteries might be a bad choice for my application on account of them needing a high top off voltage and my truck not being able to supply it.

Problems:

They say a starting battery shouldn’t be discharged bellow 10%, which only leaves me about 4 hours fridge time where I need about 12.

The trouble is that deep cycle batteries really don’t like being called on for cranking duty either...which is what will happen most often.

AGM batteries (which can dual cycle) don’t seem to be getting an adequate charge on my system.

So, if you needed a reliable wet cell battery, but it also needed to handle about 24 Ahr of drain on a semi-regular basis...what would you buy?

Go cheaper wet cell starter and hurt the battery only occasionally (on trips)?

Go slightly more expensive marine and hurt the battery less more often?

Go expensive AGM and plug in every night?

Ideally I will be going dual battery in the future, one for house one for starting so don’t recommend that...I have tonight to install it all before I leave.

I believe that there are marine batteries that are for starting and deep cycle, but I’d have to double check. It’s been about a year and a half since I sold them. Yeah, the price hit would suck, but if it works, it would be a better solution.

The dual cycle batteries as far as I can work out are AGM or gel which I don’t think work well for me. The trouble is that they want 14.6-14.8 volts for the absorption phase and my alternator is only giving them 14.4

Go for the highest Ah-rating wet cell and hook it up to a trickle charger on a semi-regular basis. Charging slowly will wear it out less quickly than if you do it to like, a 30 amp charger.

(I have a Battery Tender for trickle recharging batteries and a 15 amp charger for keeping the battery from draining while flashing the ECU which makes the fuel pump run constantly.)

I found a nice 68ahr stock battery in the wet cell, but they say for starting batteries to avoid drains of more than 10%. The other trouble is, of course, i need it tonight and I have reverse terminals so I can’t really shop around too much.

Why not set up some kind of auxillary system? Have one battery responsible for starting and powering systems on the car and have another system designed for your external loads.

Is there a micro diesel generator made?

EDIT: looks like there is a dual cycle wet cell marine...its a little different dimensionally with a group 27, but i can see if it fits. The terminals are reversed though...so I would need to make sure it fits.

Your working around something you already know the answer to, you’ve said it yourself. You need a dual batt setup.

Westys had them in 84.. every travel trailer uses the same basic setup now; Run the fridge and lights off the house batt and then recharge it when you drive.

Find the option that gets you closer to that.. leave your old batt in for starting and get a deep cycle, work out a dual setup and then go from there.

Looking at Land Cruiser batteries it appears the common sizes are 24F and 27F. Quick search found a Bosch S5516B 27F with 750 CCA, 70 Ah, 120 min reserve capacity. Walmart has an EverStart Maxx 27F with 810 CCA and 140 reserve capacity but it doesn’t mention the Ah rating. I’m assuming it’s perhaps a bit higher than the 70 on the Bosch given the other ratings are higher. I’m not sure how reliable the reserve capacity number is because there are Interstate and AutoZone 27F batteries rated at 710 CCA but 165 min reserve.

Here’s my advice starting with a summary table of the different types of lead acid batteries:

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/bu_214_summary_table_of_lead_based_batteries

Here is a summary of nickel-based batteries:

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/bu_215_summary_table_of_nickel_based_batteries

And a summary of Lithium battery types:

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/bu_216_summary_table_of_lithium_based_batteries

Here is a list of battery dos and don’ts:
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/do_and_dont_battery_table

And have a read of Battery University’s take on the Tesla PowerWall:

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/teslas_iphone_moment_how_the_powerwall_will_change_global_energy_use

So what should you go with? I’m really not sure. But I suggest at least looking at the Tesla PowerWall, which at $3000, I suspect is the ‘Cadillac solution’.

Got ahead of my self. Buy something for cranking and then start working towards a secondary system. Or spend a ton of money on a really high capacity lithium setup.

Assuming you mean this , it’s another 710 CCA and no Ah rating. It’s a bit of guesswork but I feel like the Walmart one with the 810 CCA would hopefully also have a higher Ah rating? Unless there’s no Walmart nearby, might be worth a look.

This one actually.

I have sorted out what I am going to do. Im going to not worry about it and bring along a spare 24R deep cycle I have for my trailer to run the fridge if I need. Then I will work out the details of a dual battery system later.

Go with a Long Ranger or a tow-behind fuel trailer and never shut the engine off again.
