That is NOT a poorly done bronze plasti-dip. This car has silver wheels.

Sure it’s not mud? As for how, track day, bro!

if that was mud, side of the car would have some of it. Doubt anyone would wash a car without washing the wheels.

My money is on a frozen caliper. I’m sure it makes a terrible noise when it’s moving.

nope, that’s common with high-dust semi-metallic pads. they’re basically iron filings held together with a binder; if you don’t clean your wheels the brake dust will rust.

‘course, the only time I’ve seen it that bad is when the pads were toast and the numpty driving it was blithely ignoring the grinding of metal-on-metal.

Around here the statusmobile BMW 5 series and Benz E-classes all have completely blacked front wheels. Odd that the truck’s brake dust is so brown; perhaps it’s a different compound from lighter-duty passenger cars.

Mine are almost that bad on the rims because aggressive track pads that mean new rotors and pads every not-many miles, but it’s not like that on the tires.

I hurt for those calipers/rotors/bearing/wheel....just everything.

I shudder to think of the state of the rest of the oily bits

Someone else’s comment mentioned that cheapo brake pads have a higher iron content, which makes the brake dust actually oxidize and turn reddish. More expensive cars have better pad materials and thus different color dust.

I’ve only seen it that bad with a seized caliper, I bet it smells great too
