Shallow scratches are starting to show, but the car still looks great—the bright red literally stings your eyes in direct sunlight. Wet look still in effect!

Still need to be very careful with washing the car. Mechanic hired a high school student who washed everyone’s cars with a dish scrubber, probably. That cost me another visit to my awesome detailer who polished and reapplied a layer.

Your mechanic has someone who washes customer cars?

That looks awesome! How much (ballpark) did the coating set you back?

My dad has 2 kids that alternate days to wash and vacuum customers cars. We have to keep up with Lexus who we directly compete with somehow.

The coating itself I would guess $400-600, but I had it done together with a full 1-week paint correction which is another price point entirely.

Sometimes. His shop sits on a large plot of family-owned land, so he has expense flexibility that most other shops do not.

I’ve heard some good stuff about 22ple (it’s still quite new to the U.K. I believe). I hope your doing your part to maintain the coating.

When Piglet goes for a service, so she doesn’t get washed by a sponge monkey, I give her a good wash the day or so before she goes in and these get hung from the rear view mirror.

Thanks for the flattery; I try. 8k miles in just under 3 years. I used to be shy about adding miles, but now I’m a fair bit more YOLO about it.

I just did a google and one car kit is $75.

Detailer only recommends that I report back to him like a good dog every year.

I rinse and wipe with towel weight only. Seems to be working so far.

I will have to look into this. Does it offer protection or just shine? My car is still super shiny but I’m wondering how long that will last. When clean and sunny, you can’t see the paint. You just see a red reflection of the sky, tress, etc. haha

Oh wow I’ve had the Gran Torino about 4 years just a bit longer and when I got it it had 61k on the clock now it has 86k on the clock.

I meant to have it done professionally. Looks like $2500 just getting in the door for full paint correction and the ceramic coating.

A wash with Gtechniq Gwash and dried using a drying aid such as Gyeon Cure. The Gwash is a super lubricious shampoo that’s safe for waxes and coatings but removes dirt very well, Cure is an Si02 based product which bonds to other Si02 based sealants and coatings such as 22ple and will help prolong the life of the coating and aid keeping it clean.

Did he not give you a care package? tut tut tut.

It’s just a more durable equivalent to wax. If your car is swirl-free it probably doesn’t need any attention (just careful washing) until swirls start to appear. When that time comes take it to a specialist detailer that offers paint correction. Not that your car will need it, but those guys will understand the kind of attention your car needs.

Well, it depends on where you go. On a Ferrari you might take it to a $X,XXX retailer but if you’re doing an Accord you wouldn’t pay that much for a full paint correction and coating...

I do have a waterless wash from Chemical Brothers, but my car rarely gets dirty enough to need a real soapy wash. Usually it’s just dust, which rinses off. The spray does work quite well where dirt has accumulated.

Nope, no care products from the guy. Just YOLOing it for now, will change strategy if it degrades noticeably.

Great, thanks for the info! I have a few very light swirls but they are impossible to see when the car is clean due to the insanely reflective paint.

What do you use on the leather? The consensus on F-Chat is Leatherique but without knowing the history of products used on my leather, I’m very weary to use such a hardcore cleaner. There are a few horror stories of it removing redyes and making the leather permanently sticky due to it pulling out a cheap cleaner that was used in years past.

The paint correction is the expensive part. It seems like the level of paint correction plays more on the price than the car and it seems like any car that Isnt brand new needs more than just the first couple of tiers. I have a clear bra on my M3 that is nearing the end of it’s life, and I’m looking to have it removed, paint correction and the ceramic coating. I’ve pinged a few local plcaces. $2300 has been the lowest quote.

Oh sorry.

I thought everyone knew Piglet by now. She’s my baby. The letters on the licence place (underneath my ‘detailing plates’) read ‘Piglyy’, so she’s called Piglet.

Yea I wouldn’t have any interest in the paint correction if it was still my DD. The bra has been great but it wasn’t cheap either and it only covers part of the car. In addition the clear bra sucks, to wash! I have to soak the front of the car with a wet towel for 10 minutes in order to get bugs/dirt off without scrubbing too hard

I just use cheap Lexol leather conditioner which my mechanic uses on all his customer cars. It’s not as thorough as Leatherique. Leatherique is hardcore and something I do not have the patience for.

I don’t DD my car so the wear on the interior is not terrible.

The problem with exotics is the deeply sculpted shapes which require slow speed, methodical care and attention to detail. Paint/clearcoat thickness varies over the body, so you don’t want to burn off too much.

Sharp edges such as my car’s flying buttress edges are especially tricky and prone to burn-through. Cars have been damaged this way.

Some hard-to-access areas require hand polishing, and intricately detailed or hard-to-reach components (such as my car’s louvred engine bonnet) are removed for ease of access.
