Kinja'd!!!

Here’s the scenario... trying to figure out my maintenance vs budgeting strategy here.

Solstice went in storage October, had last oil change and coolant past September, brake fluid done in 2015, transmission, and diff done 3+ years ago, 2014 and 2013 respectively. Leaving storage April or May depending on weather.

F30 came out of storage in October, had oil and brake fluid, coolant at once just as it came out. Tranny and diff fluid from factory since 2012 or later, didn’t know what previous owner did. Will enter hibernation as soon as Solstice come out, but will be back out again coming end of September.

Now... I’m trying to prioritize these items:

- Tranny and Diff Fluid on Solstice

- Brake Fluid on Solstice

- Brake slider pins maintenance on F30 (front and rear brakes were both recently replaced, but before the winter hit)

- Brake maintenance on Solstice (do I even need that annually annually if she’s Summer only?)

- Oil Change on F30 before OR after hibernation?

- Tranny and Diff Fluid on F30 before or after hibernation?

What would Oppo do?

*check* diff fluid, do oil and trans fluid on F30 in one day as soon as possible, neglect brake slider pins for now, keep driving.

Do trans job on Solstice when it comes out (if it really needs it), drive for a while to see if anything shakes out you haven’t encountered yet, then do wheels-off brakes checkup (and possible service) later in summer and use the opportunity while it’s on stands to do the brake fluid and wash up afterwards.

Buy all the things, do all the things.

So you recommend the oil change prior to storage? I guess that makes sense too. I always thought clean oil on the other end after it’s been sitting for the season, but I guess mine is sitting through winter so more warm/cold cycles and possible moisture in fluids. This one will be sitting on more temperate weather so not as bad. Reminds me, my Dakota is due for brake fluid flush this year, and probably trans and diff as well. Oil is good for now. Coolant was done last year with the new timing set.

I was going for him going ahead and changing the oil, because that way he’s not on a timetable for putting it away based on when it’s due. If he keeps driving it for a couple of weeks after the change, it’s okay. You’re right that some condensation/etc. might build up, but I wouldn’t expect that all to come out with an oil change more than evaporate out in use, and if it sits for a *really* long time, anything that’s in suspension now may settle out too well for an oil change right after to get it - it may still be on the bottom of the pan, even after some running.

Plus, if the new oil has tasty fresh surface additives, it wouldn’t be bad to get them applied to various surfaces before it sits long enough to do some drying out...

That’s good logic. I’ll have to swap my procedures for next winter with the dak.

I did forget to mention she actually sleeps in a climate and humidity controlled storage for winter months. But I was thinking sticking to 6-months max for oil is good insurance, but plus or minus a month won’t be life and death. Oil changes doesn’t cost too much anyways, relative to the other things.

I can’t imagine a modern oil will go bad from sitting. Like, at all. 6 months on a car in use is one thing, but where is oil even going to get enough air to oxidize in that timeframe, if in fact it were going to oxidize or break down at all?

I suppose. If anything there’s not much mileage on the oil, spent most of the time after the change in the body shop.

Believe it or not I might actually just do that. I might just reset all the maintenance to right before going into storage for both.

I mean, it’s never a bad thing, right? If you add a couple six packs to the list, I bet you could get some help, too!

Well the only bad thing it’s for is my wallet...

My fault though, I should have budgeted a little more when I bought my car to factor in my paranoia.

Except Amazon.ca doesn’t have most of the stuff.
