Very sad story.

Things like this have to serve as a reminder to folks like us, the older cars we love so much simply are not as safe and do not hold up as well as newer ones in an accident. I’ve never owned a car newer than 15 years old, out of choice rather than budget, and my current daily driver doesn’t even have airbags. I justify this by being young and not having anybody dependent on me, but if and when I have a family I’ll need to make a tough call(judging from your sidebar you made the right decision in that situation).

My condolences to their family

Yup. I long for the cars I used to drive 25  years ago. I sorely miss my CRX, but there’s no way I could drive one today with how large other vehicles have gotten. If I ever were to get in an accident I’d probably fair like this poor woman here. It’s the same reason why I don’t have a motorcycle (well, that and the fact I don’t know how to ride one).

That’s exactly why the day I find out I’m having a child is the day I drive a brand new car off the lot. Either a minivan or Subaru preferably.

My daily right now is a 1991 Toyota 4Runner so it doesn’t feel very small compared with modern traffic but I am very aware of the fact that it has no airbags, no real crumple zones or side-impact protection and the narrow-track/high-floor combo that make it so capable and easy to drive off-road create a large rollover risk.

I really, really want to learn how to ride a motorcycle. I’m still in college and on my dad’s health insurance, his ultimatum was no motorcycle while I’m on his insurance and he’s still helping me pay for school etc. I’m a second semester senior, so we’ll see what happens after. I know they’re terribly unsafe but it’s something I really want to have in my life.

I think I’m more aware of my own mortality than a lot of people my age but also have a natural preference for older things(especially vehicles) so I’m thinking a good compromise to extend my lifespan might be a new but still fun daily and old cars, trucks and motorcycles for the weekend

I don’t think I’ll go that far(unless the Subaru you mean is a WRX, then maybe) because I don’t think you need to give up your passions because you have a child, I think you’re better off sharing them. Nothing wrong with a GTI or a Focus ST to dad with.

Although if I was going to go full parent-mobile Volvos have been looking pretty damn nice lately.

I love subarus and I love minivans. I’m not giving up anything, I’m gaining a reason.

Well, there you go then, good for you!

It just rankles me when someone goes and gets a minivan or crossover they hate because they had a kid. Assuming you aren’t planning to have more than two(which most people aren’t these days) nothing’s stopping you from a GTI or a luxury sports sedan(if you can afford it).

I fully understand that and I don’t understand why people do it. I will never have a full on need for a minivan kids wise but I love them especially the newer ones. They amaze me with all the gadgets and the surprisingly good looks. I will never be an SUV person though and I love having a ton of room. So wagon or van it is.

I find the expectation of “safety” to be rather comical to a certain extent. How can I complain about car safety when guys are out riding around on 150+hp motorcycles legally.

My thing is buyer/driver beware. Cars, by definition, just are NOT as safe as people think. Amazing inventions. As much as I love cars, I also accept that we are driving between 2,000-4,000lbs of metal down the road. Part of me wishes that cars did not have such a high expectation of safety so people would have more respect for them.

This! After I was pretty banged up when my ‘66 Mustang got totaled at 30 mph, I decided no cars without modern safety equipment (particularly since I sometimes would have the kids in the car on the weekends).

To be fair: anything vs a big rig is high probability of fatality due to size and weight disparities.

That said, a safe modern car will do much better esp against suvs and larger passenger light vehicles.

Also, I have a hunch that said family cant afford anything else. Hard to judge with so many people who are struggling to survive in this country these days.

Thoughts and prayers are with them.

I’m not complaining about car safety, I’m just acknowledging the fact that my 1991 Toyota 4Runner is not nearly as safe as any modern car, simply because of the large improvements in technology and tightening of regulations since it rolled off the production line over 25 years ago(at the time, pickup trucks and SUVs had very few safety regulations). For me, I can live with that risk to drive what I want. New car or old car, I am an attentive and defensive driver.

That said, if and when I have kids who will be both riding in my vehicle on a regular basis and dependent on having a dad who’s both alive and able bodied, I’ll be damned if I’m not driving something at least reasonably up-to-date from a safety standpoint. Shit happens and while almost all accidents can be avoided nobody is a perfect driver and sometimes something just ends up out of our control.

Yeah, I had my ‘08 Mazda3 but I just couldn’t justify putting my infant son in it. I know it was and is safer than many cars, but I wanted safer. And more space, of course. His giant car seat would’ve made sure the passenger seat of the 3 had to be moved basically up front into the dash.

The 6 is an IIHS top safety pick + and has plenty of space, so I at least feel a little better as I cart myself, my wife, my infant son, and my dog around.

Same. That’s why I snatched up my new 6. People judge me for having a car payment. Sorry. I’ll drive a new and safe car around with my kid in it and make payments on it long before I’ll own an old jalopy outright and put my kid in it.

Yeah, this is a pretty poor and rural area that this accident happened in. I know that mom was driving a Metro likely because that’s all she could afford. :( Anything would lose against a semi, but something more modern and sizable may have fared a bit better.

You could do much worse than a 3 haha, like my 2nd gen 4Runner or E36

This is true. It still had a total of 8 airbags. Size was my biggest concern. It felt mighty small next to the Suburbans and shit I drive next to daily.
