Kinja'd!!!

I had to miss the 2nd day of the Europpomeet due to some health-issues back home. Being disappointed I’d miss the day at the Nordschleife I decided to take the 911 for a short spin before putting her back into my garage. Then... It started to stutter. It would idle but the moment I stepped on the gas it would just shut off the fuel or ignition, felt something like that. When I came to a halt at a parking I let it idle and noticed that after a few seconds it revved up a bit and then back to idle. Some cut in the plastics from throttle to inlet? Then it would be a constant uprevving, right? Some sensor (the L-Jetronic has 3!) of the fuel injection? Nothing I could fix there for sure. So I called roadside assistance. Who were not able to fix it either. So it had to be towed to my local shop, run by Lothar. Who’s closed at Sunday so they’d take it to their local storage and deliver it at Lothar’s next day. Then Lothar called on Monday morning before I was able to contact him. Asking what on earth had happened. I explained it all and then he asked “but what about that fender?”. What about what?

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

WHAT????? That’s not how I left it? No idea what that company did to it but that’s not how I left it. And that’s not all, the entire car was covered in splashes of coolant. It’s an AIRCOOLED car for God’s sake!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

No idea how quick I’ll have this fixed but no one taking responsibility for this by themselves: what world we’re living in???? Better remember to take pictures of the car before it’s being towed next time, I’m glad I did! And damned: I’m beaten by a 300k / 17 year old 406 Coupé when it comes to reliability!

I’m so sorry man. Unfortunately we didn’t get to talk at oppomeet but that car was stunning. I hope it gets fixed and more importantly I hope your family health issues improve too.

Yeah, I’m really glad I did. The first guy of Road assistance was some sort of car-nut and we walked around and talked about the car a lot before it was loaded up on the truck so I had a witness but this certainly made it easier. What I don’t get it is how no one did “notice” it before it was taken to Lothar!!!

At first glance it seems to be just the fender but we’ll have to check the front suspension of course. I really have no idea what happened. What’s that coolant coming from???

Don’t feel bad. The 406 coupe not only has a mere 296k km, it beats most cars when it comes to reliability.

But on a more serious note, this really sucks man. Isn’t Lothar or the ANWB able to tell you where it was towed to on Sunday? You do have that picture with the ANWB van next to it when it wasn’t damaged.

That wing can’t be cheap (junkyard maybe?) and even in white it’ll take a complete respray to make it match, to say nothing of the damage from the pink stuff. Ugh. Drove around in college in a yellow Volvo with a right front wing that was dark green. Not a great look.

Kinja'd!!! "Jobjoris" (Jobjoris)
03/28/2017 at 08:57, STARS: 0

According to Lothar it was probably the heat sensor. It’s a one-wire sensor (with grounding to the cylinder head) that Porsche already replaced by a two wire sensor (with proper grounding). HOW CAN YOUR WATERCOOLED FRENCH CAR BE SO RELIABLE????

It was towed to Logix in Eindhoven. The ANWB has held them responsible already and point to them. I on the other hand have only an agreement with the ANWB, not Logix. Die heb ik dus aansprakelijk gesteld.

I NEED MY LITTLE PAO TO GIVE ME COMFORT! Thanks.

I’ve already held Roadside assistance responsible for this. Seems to work out as I’ve got enough proof (pictures before it was taken, the guy from road assistance and I talked a lot and walked around the car so there’s even a witness). But still: why don’t people just take responsibility?

Kinja'd!!! "duurtlang" (duurtlang)
03/28/2017 at 09:02, STARS: 1

I guess you and the ANWB are both right. Logix probably caused the damage, but that’s not your problem as it was under ANWB’s care.

And about the coupe: it’s not faultless. Besides the paint issues on the hood it has some idling issue which causes it to stall (when idling) sometimes. Probably a sensor somewhere, I bet it’s the MAF.

The wing, unpainted, is about 800 euros without tax. I’m not putting junkyard parts on a 30+ euro worth (???) of a car. Seems the insurance of the towing company will cover the damage. Otherwise my own insurance.

The pink stuff shouldn’t be of the biting/hazardous kind. It just shows how utterly neglecting the towing company was.

Wow, a nightmare. I hope insurance comes through. A few years ago when a FI-related component on the fintail finally gave out (after 50+ years, I shouldn’t complain), I had to have it removed on a flatbed to be repaired. I watched and kept an eye on the car the entire time, including following the truck, even though the driver appeared to be fine. The car did get a scrape though, inflicted by me when trying to push it out of an underground garage (never do that again!) No fun.

I’m sure insurance will work out fine, it’s all risk insured so in the end it’ll work out fine in this overly insured country. It’s just all the hassle. And the fact someone inflicts this kind of damage and just calls it the day!!!

It’s the second time, in 13 years of ownership, it fails me so I’m still proud of it. The other time it was the aftermarket alarm that prevented it to start so I can’t even blame Porsche for that.

Yeah, around here dealing with insurance can take hours. I don’t envy you.

I wonder if the truck accidentally bumped it after leaving it, before Lothar saw it, or maybe at the storage area. Still doesn’t explain the coolant mess. Some people.

I am at nearly 22 years with the fintail now, which dates me - I was 18 when I bought it. It really hasn’t had a stranding issue since 1998, when a transmission cooling line broke. I knew the FI component was failing, so I don’t count that so much. Several years ago the shift linkage broke, but did so when I was driving - it was in a forward gear, so the car was able to be driven (the car can be started in gear, kind of weird for an automatic). All in all, for a car so old that hasn’t been kept in a sterile bubble, it is very reliable. I have seen Porsches of your vintage here with a couple hundred thousand miles on the clock.

It wasn’t unloaded until Lothar was called upon as he had to pinpoint where to put it. So it has to have happened at the transit/storage area.

I’m at the point some of the rubbers and lines need replacement, purely due to aging. And after 200k (I’m just over 190K as we speak) there’s the risk of a new clutch needed. The engine will get to 300K. No doubt there.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First and foremost I hope the family is healthy, sorry to hear that. Cars don’t matter much compared to them!

But the cars... Unbelievable that anyone would not only allow this to happen, but then not take responsibility. I hate this world too, every damn day, for reasons like this. I only use one local tow company because all the others have proven to be incompetent. And the coolant?!? WTF!!!! I am filled with rage for you, and I hope she gets a proper refurbishment on someone else’s dime.

As to the running problems that’s Motronic (the Carrera was one of the first cars to get it), not L-Jet, so it’s got a TDC sensor, an engine speed sensor (same sensor physically, next to each other but serving different purposes), and the cylinder head temp sensor on the back of the engine at the #3 cylinder head, and a throttle switch, in addition to the AFM. The symptom almost sounds like the way these behave when you unplug the AFM, which could mean an air leak somewhere or bad AFM. The cylinder head temp sensor can cause all kinds of weird running too, it serves the same purpose as a coolant temp sensor on a lesser watercooled car, telling the DME (engine computer) what enrichment needs to be for any given temperature. If it thinks the car is hot when it’s cold, for example, it could cause a big stumble because it’s running too lean but might still idle because that throttle switch I mentioned causes enrichment at idle and full throttle. A few possibilities, anyway. Sorry she let you down, but at least it happened near home and not climbing Raidillon or en route to/from Oppomeet. I’m interested to hear what Lothar finds.

Kinja'd!!! "Jobjoris" (Jobjoris)
03/29/2017 at 17:23, STARS: 1

It’s the little one obviously... Big and therefor often infected tonsils. They’ll be removed the 25th of April, they need to go. Hope that’ll do the trick, she hardly sleeps when this happens and it’s simply too often!

I cannot imagine one just walks away. I think, looking at the height of the impact, some truck bumped in to it at the transit area. I don’t even want to know where that coolant came from.

Does it sound AFM? I was thinking the heat sensor as:

1. That still is the old-school one-wire sensor which Porsche themselves replaced with a two wire (no longer grounding it through the cylinderhead) sensor to fix issues;

2. When re-starting the car it will run idle at first and only after a many seconds the up-revving starts. I feel the AFM will cause it to do that immediately, right?

I’ve forgiven her/him (my Z4 was a she, I’ve always thought of the Porker as a masculine actually) already, almost instantly. He’s 30 years old. Stuff will break. And I’ve driven a lot without anything else going wrong, he still is reliable in my book!

Oh no! Poor thing. Best wishes for improvement after the surgery, that’s got to be hard to go through.

Most likely the temp sensor, for sure. But the symptoms just reminded me of when the AFM is disconnected. No doubt it’s still a great car, this is a minor speed bump before  tons more miles ahead!

Europpomeet was fun, too bad it was such a short one for me. Next year...

I have no idea what happened, nor do I have any idea how on earth “nobody noticed” this. My insurance sure will cover but they’ll certainly get it back from the towing company. The mechanical issue is probably the heat sensor of the Motronic (TFritch agreed with my own analysis but did correct me on the L-Jetronic: It’s a Motronic). A 200 euro part, so not that bad. It will need a new 800 euro fender. Un painted. And getting the paint right could be an issue with such an old car. DAMN!

Tonsils! We’re the first generation they were not removed en masse I think.

That has a wheel from an 80s car, and I believe, given the grill, that it’s a ‘71, but I can’t be sure. If you change the oil and rebuild the carbs (and I did both) it’s impossible to kill these things.

Yeah, how the hell do you not notice you’re putting a huge dent in the car you’re trailering? Whatever the incident was, it couldn’t have been subtle. Yeah, matching the old white paint will be a bitch. And, I wouldn’t be able to look at it if it’s a little off from the rest of the car. That happened with my gorgeous brown Pacer. Someone hit its front fender and from then on, that fender was just a little different from the rest of the car. So annoying. Well, I’m sorry this happened so soon after you took it out of its winter slumber. How long will it be down do you think? I imagine the heat sensor is easy.

True. They used to rip those things out of everybody. Well, she’ll get to eat lots of ice cream for a while. When’s the procedure?

Kinja'd!!! "Jobjoris" (Jobjoris)
04/01/2017 at 07:01, STARS: 1

The more I look at it, the more I feel a truck of some kind “touched it” with backing up. The impact is that high. They can get a pretty good match nowadays but a trained eye will notice. The aging of the paint will not be the same though so anyway: I’m fucked! I’ve had an impact analysis by Lothar: 2,600+ euros. So now it’s case the damage inspection will check that and then it will be repaired. Won’t take that long, I need it the 14th of May for an official Porsche meeting (in which it will be shot for a book by the importer). Better tell the photographer to only shoot it from the right...

25th of April she’ll have the procedure.

Yeah, being backed into makes sense. Whoever it was had no idea it was there, apparently. Maybe you can take the painted fender to a tanning salon and put it in one of the sun beds to try and mimic the fading. Then spray it with water for a day or so, and wash it a bunch of times. As good as new (old). Your car will be like a movie star with a good side and a bad side.

How is she feeling now? Does she know she’s going into the hospital in a couple weeks?

It’s a bit high so I presume a truck backing up ran into it. Mega bummer as the fender needs a respray. Not sure if they’ll be able to match it to the rest of the car.

Why are you in the grey on Oppo????

Good call on the fender. I need to tell Lothar not to throw it away! It will be an ornament somewhere in the man cave!

She’s better now but it will come back if we don’t do a thing. She snores while sleeping, that’s kinda funny.

You totally need to save it. I’m sure Krista will love it as a decoration. I have a Pacer tailgate hanging in my garage. And, a Le Car door with the decal on it, but that I’m going to use at some point.

That sounds cute. I snore. Maybe I should get my tonsils out.

Then you definitely need to get ‘m out. You have a cat, it will probably kill you in your sleep when it is a bit grumpy!

You’re probably right. She wakes me up if I’m too loud. I also notice she’ll come into the bedroom when I wake up even if I haven’t said her name, or anything, so she must know I’m awake because I stopped making that terrible noise.

Terrible noise? Beautiful noise! It’s just the female part of the world that has a problem with it, your cat just proves this theory! Get a male cat!

Haha. True. I’m not sure it bothers her so much as it lets her know I’m asleep.

Nothing. It wouldn’t move an inch. Stupid hybrids. The garage got me a nice replacement though.

PILOT ASSIST! I don’t even have to steer it on the highway!!!

Ooo. Is that a new XC90? Fan-cy. What are you supposed to do while it’s steering for you? I’ve never really gotten tired of steering.

Yes it is!

Kinja'd!!!

Bit smallish wheels. Huge thing for European standards (3 seat rows!).

Nothing! Well, actually, if you don’t touch the steering wheel for an N-period it stops working with a loud bell. To prevent you from falling asleep or something.

You and your “too small” Volvo wheels. You always say that. They actually do look a little too petite on that thing. Lovely car, though, if you like driving something gargantuan.

So, it’s literally just steering. You still have to have your hands up there. That sounds much more annoying than having to steer.

Haha, no I don’t! For my wagons I need bigger wheels for handling. For this handling isn’t really a thing. It just looks like a shoppincart this way.

It’s True.

You’re always telling me my car’s wheels are too small. :/ What size are those wheels? It needs some dubs.

Kinja'd!!! "Jobjoris" (Jobjoris)
04/16/2017 at 02:58, STARS: 1

No idea, they probably are way too big for the Le Car, something like 17". They just appear to be small. Like those base-wheels on the Tesla, these are freaking 19" and still look pathetic. What do you mean with “dubs”?

Kinja'd!!! "Jonee" (Jonee)
04/16/2017 at 23:54, STARS: 1

“Dubs” are 20 inch wheels. 22 makes more sense to me, but they started with 20 inchers, so those are dubs. The C30 has 17", so that size on an SUV is small. It’s the rear one on a Tesla that looks so tiny. I guess it’s that fender flare that does it.

Kinja'd!!!

It makes it look smaller than the front wheel.
