Kinja'd!!!

I’m replacing my old non-functional cat with a new high flow one. Finally removed rusted out old one with the help of my neighbors giant cutoff wheel, but I’ve got a problem. Which way does the new one go on? I imagine it only works if you line it up one way, but I have no clue how to tell the inlet side from the outlet. Also, am I correct in assuming once I get do figure out the inlet side of the cat, that would bolt up to the downpipe and outlet to the midpipe?? I can’t find any info on a cat install online (that doesn’t assume the mechanic knows what their doing) and if I ask this on a Miata forum I’ll be permabanned Help plz oppo

Is there a place to mount an oxygen sensor? Also, on my high-flow cat the flanges are different on each side.

Flanges are the same, no mounting points unless I’m missing something...

Quick google tells me; 3 way cats are directional, but will usually be labeled. 2 way cats aren’t directional and thus don’t have arrows. I’d assume you have a two way.

Yeah youd think if it was directional it would have a couple arrows or something indicating flow.

According to the website I bought it, it’s 3way... So I’m just going to install hope I get lucky and call them tomorrow during business hours to figure it out for sure

Isn’t that an arrow on the bottom of the new Cat?

Look for an arrow stamping on the cat somewhere.

There’s an arrow welded into it.

If I could do it over again I would have bought a test pipe... 1/3rd the cost too

Yeah I thought that was just some kind of welding burr or something... That’s embarrassing!

I thought that was just a welding burr of some sort... This is almost as embarrassing as the time I though I damaged my frame because the passenger door wouldn’t open.... And it was just locked for once.....

Unfortunately.... The whole reason I bought it was to get rid of a rattle. Which is still here. Now I genuinely have no clue what could be causing it.... I’ve replaced every exhaust component except the headers. Maybe the OG cat was still good. Or maybe the new one is also bad haha

I thought my windows were broken for several days only to find out the lock switch had been depressed, so yeah I can relate.

Checked the heat shield on the exhaust header? It could be loose but be careful not to shear the bolts holding it in place (probably since new).

Never would have crossed my mind... Watch that be it. I’m taking it to an exhaust shop to go over everything and have a downpipe made, left a quick note of that, thank you!
