I’m interested in what Oppo’s favorite spirits are.

Beer: Tsingtao. Honorable mention: Croydon Cream Ale.

Scotch: Laphroig 10 year. There are much better Laphroig vintages, but I can’t find them and I probably wouldn’t pay whatever they cost if I did. Honorable mention: Glenlivet 12 year

Gin: Hendrick’s. Honorable mention: Aviation

Rum: Meh. I usually only drink rum when I’m traveling and someone is like “they have proper Cuban rum outside of the U.S.” So I guess Havana Club, but I don’t really care.

Vodka: Reyka, because I was sanctioning Russia before it was cool and then not cool. Also, I don’t care for vodka.

Tequila: ???

White wine: Txakoli. Honorable mention: Pouilly-Fuissé

Red wine: Cheap Beaujolais. Honorable mention: Garnacha.

Sherry: Very dry.

Sparkling wine: anything that isn’t rosé or Italian.

I’m one of the Whiskey experts of OPPO (give The Cask a search in OPPO and you’ll see what I mean). I enjoy almost all things whiskey with the exception of peated scotches. I also prefer my Scotch to be single malt and from the highlands (specifically speyside) and my Irish whiskey to be blended. I’m a huge fan of Bourbon’s and Canadian as well.

Definitely into beer too of course but I don’t drink any other liquor, there’s plenty of variety inside whiskey to keep me happy. For beer I go to Red’s, Browns, and most recently - Red IPA’s if I can find them.

Lent is about halfway over and I ’ m still torn whether I ’ m going back to drinking. I feel SOO much better and have more energy, even coming from just 1 - 2 drinks a day to zero. That aside, all my choices are economically - oriented — I know there ’ s better stuff out there, but everything I drink is something I have to be able to afford and enjoy on a daily basis (or very nearly):

Beer (IPA): Cigar City Jai Alai, Bell ’ s Two Hearted, or Lagunitas Little Sumpin ’ Sumpin ’

Beer (Belgian): Almost anything from Unibroue or Ommegang. Ironically, I don ’ t like most Belgians from Belgium.

Beer (other styles): Just about anything from Bell ’ s, Lagunitas, or Oskar Blues is good.

Bourbon: Bulleit, Buffalo Trace. Special occasion: Woodford Reserve, etc.

Vodka: Pinnacle in a big - ass plastic handle because it ’ s cheap and I won ’ t spending 10x more on something that ’ s just 20% better. Or Tito ’ s.

Tequila: Olmeca Altos (reposado) or Hornitos (reposado)

This is where I shine:

Beer: damn near anything. I think there’s a time and place for everything, and my favourite cheap swill is Pabst Blue Ribbon. In terms of good beers, I’ve really liked stuff from Magic Hat and Long Trail in Vermont, but there’s too many good crafts to list.

Spirit: whiskey is my go-to. I started with scotches, and Laphroig is a fantastic choice. My favourite scotch is Glenmorangie or the Macallan (the cheapest ones you can get from these labels). I’ve sampled nicer ones from these distilleries but scotch is very expensive in Canada. Otherwise, I really enjoy soju (Korean rice wine) and sake (Japanese rice wine), what I drink depends on the evening since soju tends to be more alcoholic.

Wines: I tend to like the ones from California, ones you can get for around $15 here in Ontario. Menage a Trois makes great wines, but I also like the Big House blends and another label called Gnarly Head.

Lately, I’ve really started to like cocktails - I think I need to build up a bar collection at home and get proper bar tools because I really enjoy this stuff.

Beer - Almost anything craft/local is good. Especially IPAs and Sours.

Whiskey - Makers Mark

Scotch - Glenfiddich or Glenlivet of any vintage really

Vodka - Titos

Tequila - This Tequila they sell in Cozumel that’s aged in Jack Daniels Barrels for 7 years. Name escapes me right now.

White Whine - Dry Whites, doesn’t matter what kind

Red Wine - Nah. Everyone around me likes Apothic Red and Bota Box, though.

Any others you want to know I missed?

Wine: Reds and dry whites.

Liquor: most kinds.

I like the little crystal light pouches, you know the single-serving ones that fit the opening of a water bottle? I like the grape flavor with a little caffeine, but the back of the package says to add it to 16 oz of water and I add it to 40 oz of water because the flavor is just way too intense at 16 oz. I wonder what kind of person can drink the packet out of just 16 oz of water, they are the true heroes.

Beer: I’m one of those IPA hipster guys, so I’d probably say Bell’s Hopslam, Deuschutes Fresh Squeezed, Sierra Nevada Hop Hunter, or Three Floyds Zombie Dust. Some others I like; Goose Island Sofie (Belgian Farmhouse Ale), Kona Longboard (lager), and Maisel’s Weisse (Hefeweizen)

Scotch: Not much of a Scotch/Whiskey/Bourbon person, but I’ve been trying to get back into it. I’ve been very slowly working my way through a bottle of Angel’s Envy.

Gin: No preference, hardly touch the stuff.

Rum: I very much enjoy rum. Zaya, Kraken, and Sailor Jerry’s being my go-to choices. I’m partial to Dark & Stormies when it comes to a dark/spiced rum cocktail. I don’t have a preference for clear rum, but really enjoy a good old school daiquiri or Hemingway.

Vodka: Tito’s. #Murica Usually in the form of a Moscow Mule or Bloody Mary

Tequila: Corralejo Reposado, very nice and smooth tequila that isn’t too expensive. I actually really enjoy tequila. Easy to drink, and pretty much never gives me a hangover. I’ve recently been turned onto various Mezcals as well.

White wine: Hardly drink the stuff.

Red wine: Duckhorn Vineyards Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon is my go-to bottle, but was recently introduced to Katherine Goldschmidt Cabernet Sauvignon and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. Silver Oak Cab is fantastic as well, but a much to pricey to drink on any regular basis for me.

Sherry: Not much experience here.

Sparkling wine: Proseco or champagne, not much of a preference on either.

I have opinions on this matter. And I like lots of things but here are my favorites.

Scotch: Aberlour A’bunadh or Lagavulin

Irish: Red Breast

I can’t think of a single valid reason to ever choose a blend over a single malt.

Bourbon & rye: Blanton’s or Michter’s; Bulleit for mixing.

Gin: Ransom Old Tom; Tanqueray 10; Hendrick’s.

Brandy: Pisco or calvados, or maybe armagnac but not cognac.

Rum: Flor de Caña.

Mezcal or tequila: Alipus or Del Maguey; El Jimador.

Liqueur: Campari or absinthe.

Vodka: fuck off

Beer: whatever’s local and pale or amber but not so bitter that I can’t taste my lunch. Mac & Jack’s is a good standby in my neck of the woods.

Red wine: good Chianti and Supertuscans, or primitivo; most big, structured Spanish reds (particularly monastrells and really funky tempranillos); Bordeaux.

White wine: sauvignon blancs and semillons—lots of minerals and no oak, please.

Rosé and/or sparkling: if nice and dry, yes please. Prosecco, Cremant de Bourgogne, Cava, Champagne...all good if they’re not sweet or yeasty.

Fortified: the whole spectrum of sherries for different purposes; good LBV portos.

Great topic!

I’m hardly a connoisseur. More knows enough to fool people who know nothing’.

Beer: a really good bitter is my go-to, or a smooth ale. If you can get hold of some Harvey’s Old that’s probably the nicest thing i regularly drink.

I’ve also taken a real liking to Gose (sour) beers, although they’re almost a different category entirely to other beers. One of those on a sunny cold day is perfect.

Recently had some very good (and rather potent!) Belgian beers on Europpomeet. Definitely prefer the darker ones.

Wine: i’m a bit of a philistine in that i tend to like cheap wines with a more acetic tabg to them, rather than the rich full-bodied plummy variety. Saying that, Fat Bastard Pinot Noir is one that sticks in my head as very nice.

White wine is what people drink when they run out of red ;)

Spirits: whatever the locals drink wherever i happen to be at the time. I’ve never had a particular affinity for any one in particular, but Grappa infused with Bergamot in the Italian pre-alps, Birch-infused schnapps from Iceland, Port in Lisbon, Brandy in France, Ouzo (with hotel breakfast!) in Greece, home-brewed rice-wine moonshine in Borneo. Everywhere has something that only they do in that particular way.q

Scotch: Very Rarely.. but when I do I tend to go for Single Malt at least 30yo. Glennfidiich seems to be what I have the most often, but it is far from my favorite. Basically it has to be a VERY fine Scotch, or mix it with a coke.

Rum: What do you have??

Vodka: We always seem to have Skyy around... not entirely sure why, but I have no complaints about it.

Tequila: Love it... but everytime I have had it... someone else ordered it... so never sure what I end up with. ( a quick side story, was bar hoping in Angeles City with some colleagues. We got separated, and when we caught back up with them they had been buying rounds of Tequila for each other. So the 3 of them all ordered me a Tequila... one each. So I downed all three Tequilas, and returned the favor by ordering us a 4th round of Tequilas. They yelled at me, don’t you know... 4 tequilas floor... stop at three. I ended up drinking 2 of their tequilas... lightweights)

White wine: rarely have it... rarely find one I enjoy... open to suggestions.

Red Wine: I have been drinking Josh a lot lately. Mostly because supposedly the owners Mother is my Neighbor... Not entirely sure I believe it from what I have read.. but I like the wine, and I’m betting there is some level of truth even if not the owner.

I have four recommendations to consider, given your tastes:

1. California old vine zinfandels. Ravenswood, Cline, Kenwood, and Bogle are all widely available and inexpensive, although of course your mileage (and your grocer, or their distributor) may vary.

2. California petite sirah and blends from inland, dry areas, like Petite Petit from Lodi or Concannon (Livermore).

3. Washington cabernet sauvignon. Often cheaper than Napa, and just as well regarded throughout the price range. Columbia Crest H3 and Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells, again, are widely available and pretty cheap.

4. Spain: the home of big, cheap red wine. Drink garnacha, jumilla, or monastrell and you will be happy. Luzon, Altos de la Hoya, and Juan Gil are all great but frankly at this point if they’re bothering to import it it’ll probably be solid.

glad you enjoyed it man, great stuff. I’m really feeling Woodford Reserve right now too, but it’s pricier at around 37.

Cork broke off? Whelp, there’s no way to close it....better drink it all then.

Actually, only about 2/3 of the cork broke off. There’s enough left that it’ll stay on, although I wouldn’t turn the bottle upside down to test it. American Airlines now has Woodford Reserve available in-flight - and I was glad to get a couple of bottles comped from LAX-ORD last week. Way better stuff than I’ve had on airplanes up until now.

nice! Good to know.

I went to a fancy dinner this past weekend for my wife’s birthday and they had a custom line of Woodford, only 14 barrels have been bottled to date. Holy shit was it good, really sweet in comparison to a normal Woodford. Was amazing.
