What in the Hell is the point of mounting turbos at the rear axle on some cars? Cleaner engine bay? More boost? I don’t get it!?!?!? Or I am totally missing something?

Some engine bays (4th gen f-body as an example) can require a lot of rework to fit a turbo. A rear mount makes it a lot easier.

Because you want lots of turbo lag.

Easier accessibility, less crowded engine bay, lower underhood temps and it means you don’t necessarily need an intercooler.

ease of install, with the turbos so far away from engine you might not need an intercooler, sleeper status under the hood.

Does the distance from the engine bay cool the charge on the way back?

Heat/packaging.

If you don’t care about lag (drag racing) it doesn’t really matter.

it might help, but its also not in the hot environment of the engine bay

It would definitely cool it a fair amount, because of the large temperature difference. Another thing is the fact that it’s not in a hot engine bay to start with, meaning it isn’t picking up as much heat initially. But like I said “necessarily”—still using an intercooler wouldn’t hurt anything.

It’s mostly a packaging thing, and somewhat cost related. It’s in all ways worse in terms of performance. The exhaust gas expends a lot of energy and cools a fair bit traveling down those pipes resulting in more lag and less overall performance compared to a conventionally mounted turbo. But if you have a car that wasn’t built with a turbo originally and doesn’t have room in the engine bay it’s a quick, relatively easy way to get a turbo on it compared to shoehorning it into the engine bay.

they also come with a massive amount of turbo lag, or so ive heard

Although for non-racing applications a bunch of lag isn’t the end of the world. Think about pulling a trailer up a hill - lag is irrelevant, you just want the extra boost for the long haul. And really, the lag isn’t that awful.

Batteries go way back there too sometimes. If its not for a weight reason, its some specific design or convenience reason.
