!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Is there something unique to the Audi turbo-5 which produces this glorious sound? Or would providing lots of boost and an open exhaust to any turbo-5 make this kind of noise?

Its the exhaust manifold that affects the way a car sounds, after valve quantity, unequal length headers etc. The sound you hear is just the exhaust pulses fighting each other on their way out the back. (i.e. WRX sound so aggressive cause of the huge difference in header length from one bank to the other.) 

On my audi  5 banger, I have the stock manifold, but at some point Im going to switch to the RS2 manifold, which changes the way the 1st and 5th cylinder join the stream. (see below)

I plan one getting a lot of sound clips to compare the difference before and after. No matter the result I’ll stick to the RS2, the stock manifold has a tendency to contribute to melting valves for 1 & 5.

An inline 5-cylinder (or, I’ve heard some radial 5-cylinders with the same note, actually) will have a fundamental note to it, but the manifold, as has been said, will influence what parts of that note and harmonics are emphasized and deemphasized.

Also, in the case of a V10, firing order will affect how it sounds, with 72 degree crankshafts (and split crank pins on 90 degree engines to get the same even firing as a 72 degree engine) having the “purest” V10 sound.
