Audi TT RS is the FWD-Biased Supercar the World Will Refuse to Love

Kinja'd!!!

If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m attracted to vehicles that are far better than people think they are. The new TT RS, with its 400 hp aluminum block 5-cylinder, 0-60 mph launches in the 3.5 second range, and delimited top speed over 170 mph is a bit of a sleeper even after reading the numbers.

The RS3 hatch is going to be universally loved from launch to landing. This TT however will have all the same awful stigmas that will make the MX-5's reputation look like a legendary tome dedicated to protecting masculinity.

I’m just thinking about how close this TT RS is to the performance and pricing the GT-R went on a rampage with back in 2009. The Alfa Romeo 4c’s value is as an exotic car at a surprisingly low price point, but I think this TT RS might be a modern supercar for big sedan dollars.

Now I know the idea is uncomfortable and you are already typing your argument against this idea in the comments below, but after you click “publish” and read this part of the post then I want you to think about what the modern supercars are like and take another look at this ankle biter. Imagine it receiving a “performance plus” upgrade and then tell me if this tiny candy bar brawler isn’t the right amount of nutty deliciousness to be a certifiable FWD-biased supercar.

*KINJA WON’T LET ME POST WITH “PM” TIMES?!!! Just kept converting to AM every try...

I agree, to a point. It does look sufficiently badass, though.

Kinja was giving me a proper shafting so I had to share from my personal blog (which I don’t do).

If Audi just turned the engine and stuck it into the S5, they’d have a hit on their hands.

400hp S5 with turbo 5 noises and RWD biased Quattro would rule.

This is the kind of car I expect to be cut off by on any kind of road.

Somewhere I have a picture of my old 1998 Audi parked with that red Ur Quattro in your pic.

If I had the money and a 3rd garage I’d roll in that.

My brain cells shifted into 3rd and I remembered posting it on here last year. Duh. Its the last picture in the post. BTW I’ve heard it at three different events and the 5 cylinder sound is awesome in that car.

God I hate this “fwd-biased” awd talk, it’s perpetually inaccurate. I don’t even like most VAG products or Haldex systems but BS is BS.

Haldex awd systems can be programmed for basically any front/rear torque bias depending on application.

All Haldex systems have varying degrees of how proactive they are at sending power to the rear wheels based on things like yaw rate, steering angle, throttle position, etc.

Cars like the TT RS get a more rear-biased Haldex calibration from the factory, and you can modify them further with Haldex controllers from HPA Motorsports .

I like the newer ones, but never liked the older gens. They looked too much like a fancy beetle to me.

The newer ones do look better & seem to have a better identity to them. The older Audi TT models felt like what Mitsubishi did with the last Eclipse “we got a design but it feels like its missing something”

now as far as people calling them supercars thats up for discussion (I personally don’t think it is, I think its Audi’s version of a Porsche Boxster/cayman where it will never be more than what you see now because betraying your flagship car is apparently against the rules)
