You may know that I own a window washing company, but my real career is helping men and women who are already in good shape, get to the next level. Whether that means prepping for a bodybuilding competition, switching from weights to yoga, gaining proficiency with martial arts weapons... I’ve done it all. Juggling, skateboarding, calligraphy, heightened pain tolerance, acute muscular control... I love to focus on the narrower skills, that to an outsider seem simple but in reality have incredible depth.

I taught one client to write beautiful cursive script with his left hand, while being right handed from birth. Another wanted to learn how to snap his fingers. He can now do so with all four fingers on each hand, in such a way as to make you think he’s playing an instrument. A lady wanted to look like her ideal image of womanly beauty. She hoped to lose weight, but more than that, she wanted to have a muscular body that she never truly believed she could achieve. She’s currently one of the healthiest people I know, and looks incredible. Those two things are very different, and the vast majority of the time they do not go together.

What I’m trying to say is that unlocking the bodies potential is my true love... I’m constantly trying to improve myself, and enjoying every step! Earning an income doing the same for others is icing on the cake. Thought I’d share a bit since Oppo is a bit slow today. Also, just to be clear, I’m NOT trying to sell my services here. I don’t do “online training” and neither do the majority of trainers who legitimately want to help.

Ask me anything!

So I watched the video before reading the post and realizing that’s you in the video. Your username makes a lot more sense now, heh. But anyway, I’ve always admired the kind of strength it takes to do the kinds of maneuvers and poses you’re doing. One of my college buddies is super into yoga and she posts photos and videos on IG all the time. Watching the strength she has created with her body is just mind blowing to me. I just don’t have that kind of strength.

Anyway, your video reminded me of one I just saw on twitter yesterday. It’s supposed to be a funny video, but this dude is crazy talented, too. At one point he lands a back flip on one hand and doesn’t let his feet touch the ground. Figured you’d probably get a kick out of seeing it.

Now that dude has some serious breakdancing background. Super impressive!

It’s been really interesting watching the huge popularity surge in yoga, and then a bit later, calisthenics. Bodyweight training seemed to go from an underground kind of thing to a globally recognized sport with huge events all over the country in just a few years. I honestly think that a huge part of it is just due to where social media currently is... Everything happened to align just right.

And hey, none of us have “that kind of strength” until we’ve been doing it for awhile :)

Yeah, he’s definitely a break dancer wouldn’t be surprised if he’s got some formal gymnastics training, too. Some of those moves were straight off the pommel horse.

Thanks for the encouragement. :)

Are you proficient in everything you teach your clients? E.g. are you ambidextrous, can throw an axe, etc...

I have never thrown an axe! Adding to the list...

There’s levels to proficiency, but yes. I’ve taught myself how to use my right hand equally as well as my left, spent lots of time with nunchucks, breathing techniques to go minutes without inhaling... You get the idea.

Honestly, the more little things I’ve picked up, the easier it’s gotten. To the point where I really think my specialty is simply put, learning. I think once you get in the right mindset of “I can do this” and truly believe that, new skills come pretty quick.

That makes sense - there are core proficiencies that can be used in many different activities. This is cool! I didn’t know people like you existed before this :)

I just want to say that I wish I had the drive and motivation you have. I might have had some of it at one point, but man, it’s been beaten out of me over the years... I admire you greatly.

Very impressive and inspirational. “Mastering” my body is one thing I’ve never been able to do (or more accurately, never done) in my life. I was a chubby middle schooler, played sports in high school, but never got myself in peak physical condition. I’ve always been overweight to some extent (at the moment 6'1", 230 - lots of muscle but carrying too much fat. 220 is more my norm - too much celebrating recently... Aspire to get down to 200.) I’m 39, a dad with three kids, with a job that keeps me tied to the desk most of the day, finding it challenging to motivate myself to get up and get active in the evenings, but when I do go out hiking, etc. with the kids and dogs, I really enjoy myself. Any advice?

Thank you, it’s strange to hear but I really do appreciate it.

I think that drive comes and goes with all of us. I’ve definitely had lows. At the most basic level it’s just about forming simple habits. Doing something beneficial, daily, until it becomes regular enough that you couldn’t even imagine going a day without.

Someone once told me motivation is close to useless. It comes and goes, and almost never lasts. Habit, on the other hand, will hold strong even during the times you temporarily lose your focus. Paraphrasing, but it really spoke to me

Adults $50 per session

Minors, college students and active/retired military firefighters/paramedics $35 per session

Parent/child $65 per session

For what it’s worth, I’m planning on raising the adult price soon (average price for high level training is over 100 per hour) and lowering the minor/military/etc. Price.

You made a good distinction in your first sentence. While you may feel you haven’t so far, you certainly CAN master your body so to speak.

You want to make habits. Don’t worry about doing anything huge, like going to the gym twice a day 7 days a week. Just little things, done daily, until you’re at a point where they are a regular part of your schedule. Put a pull up bar in a doorway, try to do a few pull ups every time you walk by (or hangs, if you’re not doing pull ups at the moment). Things like 50 jumping Jack’s 3 times a day, just enough to get your heart rate elevated. If there’s a Misses Davesaddiction you could try going to a yoga class together. Especially for bigger dudes like us with some serious strength, working on flexibility can be a huge motivational boost for all things health related. Find something you love. If the kids can join in so it doesn’t take as much time away from your schedule even better.

I’d strongly recommend bouldering. If you’ve never experienced bouldering, simply put, it’s rock climbing at a gym where you don’t have ropes, and don’t need any prior experience to get started. You climb various marked out paths of different marked difficulty levels, testing your strength, endurance, and ability to pick the right path to utilize your strengths. The walls are generally 15ft high at the most, and the floor is 1-3 ft of solid padding. I’ve yet to see a kid (or adult) who hasn’t loved it, and it’s a fantastic workout. Per minute, one of the best calorie burners out there, while still having a heavy focus on strength gain.

Thanks for all this. It’s funny - I had a recommendation from a friend for a pull-up bar that I’d added to my Amazon wish list a few weeks ago. Just ordered it. Finding a class that both my wife and I can get involved with is a great idea, but at this point in our life, the kids’ sports consume a lot of the time we might be able to fit something like that in. I definitely need to work on my flexibility, though - currently dealing with some back pain related to hip flexor (psoas) tightness. I was starting to get in a good habit of doing at least one set of push-ups every evening before this back pain cut into that - need to get back on that wagon!

I’ll have to pursue your bouldering idea. We have a new-ish climbing gym in town, and my kids are signed up for a week at their camp this summer. Would be something that would work well for us to all do together as a family.

Glad I’m not the only one with things left in my shopping cart!

If you’ve never tried it, pick up a foam roller. It’s painful enough to bring tears to your eyes if you’re using it right, but it really digs into those muscles and keeps them from tightening up like that.

Haha - my Amazon wish list is pretty ridiculous... but I think it is a good trait that usually sleep on purchases before I commit. Good way to save a lot of money on unnecessary crap!

I’ve got one, just need to use it, I guess! I just usually ask Mrs. addiction to try to work it out for me.

Thanks again for the motivation.
