Kinja'd!!!

Just a short while ago I finished fixing my exhaust and did an oil change. Both as a little maintenance before a road trip that will be about 1700 miles. As I drained the oil back into the jug I decided to use a strainer. And little pieces of metal showed up. It appears this road trip will be this engine’s last hurrah before the rebuild. Luckily I found an engine on Craigslist for $250 that I can put in so I can have a striker engine built in place of this one.

How many miles, also 4.0?

It’s a 4.0L. It doesn’t need that metal to run another 200,000 miles. Its just clearancing itself for greatness.

It’s only got 172k. It’s just had a few hiccups, overheated a few times, blew a head gasket cracked a head. You know, regular 2000 XJ 4.0 stuff.

It sounds perfectly fine to be honest. I’m kind of looking for an excuse for more power.

I’m glad that’s just a Jeep thing, not a Honda thing ;)

For having cracked a head and blown a head gasket and a couple overheating incidents in going to say it’s doing well. How many engines go through that and are still going strong as they toss out little metal bits?

I don’t know if I’d be driving 1400 miles with metal coming out of the oil. Could throw a rod, drop a valve, who knows.

It’s not much. Plus if it happens it will be fixed. I’ve checked in every are I will be going through to see if there are engines available. If it happens I’ll find a place to fix it.

But a Honda never would’ve had those problems, given proper maintenance of course.

Meh. She’ll run till she starts knocking and then keep going for a while. If you have strained your oil before you don’t know how long that’s been in there. Could have been spitting out bits of cam bearing for the last 10,000 miles and you’d never know.

Less than 5k miles ago the head was replaced and everything. Before having the shop do the work I drained the oil and thoroughly checked it. So I’m thinking it’s a more recent thing. I have to say I’m definitely paranoid and looking at rental cars.
