Kinja'd!!!

Let’s talk about road trips.

It has been almost one year and 10,000 miles since I bought my Boxster. But when I first got it I was concerned that I would not be able to use it for road trips due to the two small trunks and I did not know how comfortable it would be for long stretches. I am fortunately that I have another car (a Corolla) that I use for commuting and could use for road trips but that we not what I had in mind when I started looking for a car. Since then I have taken the Boxster on road trips all over the south east and am pleased to say that is as good a GT car as it is a sports car.

Most of the 10,000 miles I have put on the car have been for road trips. Maybe 10% was for commutes and trips around town. While it can be fun to take it to dinner and is great fun to drive on country roads it is perfectly comfortable on long highway trips. Heat and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, powerful AC/heater, and the thick roof make sure that the cabin is comfortable. The ride is quite different than a soft luxury car but it does not beat you up. Maybe an eight hour trip would be tiring but for a weekend getaway it does fine. And any road harness is forgiven once you arrive in style or hit a back road early the next morning.

One of my favorite experiences is getting off work and heading straight to the lake house. In the summer I get off the highway while it is still light and drive about 20 miles of back roads to get to the water. Normally I put the top down either at the start or at least when I get off the highway. Cruising past all the farms as the sun is setting amongst the pine trees is the perfect way to start the weekend.

What are some of your road trip stories?

I don’t really do long road trips often. I once drove from Long Island to Rochester (400 miles) in a 2011 Wrangler. Fucking uncomfortable.

Did that same trip a few months ago in my Ram 1500 and it was the opposite. Enjoyed it thoroughly both ways.

I have a colleague that makes a trip from North Carolina to Wisconsin at least once per year in a Wrangler. He claims to see a 20% difference in mpg from going there vs coming back because of prevailing winds and slope. Highway cruisers they are not.

As a kid, did a lot of drives from Toronto to Vermont. Eight hours and a ferry ride in the winter made it a fun trip for me.

Last May, I did a trip from Toronto to Ottawa, Ottawa to Montreal and back to Ottawa, then Ottawa to Toronto in about three days with my girlfriend. It was our first big trip together, and it was kind of the test to see how things would go, because if you can survive a road trip with someone, you can survive a lot. She handled music, directions, snacks, my jokes, everything like a pro. Navigated me around downtown Montreal when there was construction. Basically, made four hours at a time in the car a lot of fun.

Seeing as I’m currently sitting on the floor of her apartment while she studies beside me, you can say that we passed the test.

I’ve done quite a few road trips in my Preludes over the years. The short gears make for relatively poor fuel mileage, but otherwise they do great.

Furthest I’ve done in one day has been about 400 miles, from the Richmond area to Nags Head and back.

At least you were going south. North of Richmond to DC is miserable.

Sounds like a good trip! Having a good copilot always makes them better.

Bingo. I may have to drive across the country, and I really need to find a good navigator for it.

That Boxster sounds wonderful for trips. People always underestimate smaller cars for gear storage... Makes me wonder just how much stuff they think they need for a few days/weeks.

I use my Miata for overnight trips every weekend in the summer, and many times throughout the rest of the year. The picture above was a 4 night camping trip with 6 friends, in these two cars, and an ek hatch. Next winter when I have winter tires and an easily removable lift kit, I’ll be going up into the mountains to play in the snow for days at a time. 4 week Washington to California to Colorado trip coming up next month too!

Yeah, I try not to drive north of Fredericksburg if at all possible. Although lately I’ve been talking to a girl from NoVA...

Now you can be like “ I drove through hell to come see you! Also Fredericksburg.”

While driving the Cougar from Colorado to NY/Montreal this summer would make for a great story, it’s not quite there yet. Thus, it’ll be a Tacoma drive. My goal is that in three years, the Cougar will make a similar trek.

The last decent road trip I made was Denver to KC in my RX8. Unfortunately, driving across Kansas isn’t very exciting, unless you like wind farms.

That is some serious camping! Did you have to bring much food or cooking gear for the 4 night trip?

There was a post on Rennlist from a couple that took their Cayman on a ski trip. They fit the skis and GF in the passenger seat. They got all their gear in there but it was way tighter than I would want.

We did the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Meteor Crater, Winslow AZ/route 66, Tonto National Forest, etc out of Phoenix last year in a rented 2016 Impala. Put well over a 1000 miles on it. Not a great canyon carver but coming in to Winslow AZ on route 66 at significantly north of posted was pretty damn epic.

I’d recommend looking at a luggage rack, I added one and it’s been so nice. It was 90° and sunny the whole trip, so we could wrap sleeping bags, tarps, and blankets around the harness bar behind the seats. Everything else fit in the trunk no problem, although we spent one night drinking at a ski resort town 50 miles away, where we also stocked up on extra food! I love backpacking but have no qualms with taking the easier route sometimes haha

Fortunately for now she goes to school down here. But if she finishes after this semester, yeah, I’ll have to remember that.

Well at least you won’t need to run the AC while in Kansas.

Very cool. A coast to coast roadtrip is one of those things that sounds awesome but you cannot really know if you will enjoy it. So good to know it can be fun. Thanks for sharing!
