Not Enough Oppo Happening Apparently

Here is some good Oppo; I’m bored with my GTI.

It’s simultaneously too fast and too slow. I am often too scared to bury the go-pedal because by the time I shift to third I’m doing 60. But it’s also not fast enough to blitz everything if I want/need it to.

The TC kicks in far too often and cannot be disabled completely. And after a little more than a year and ~11.5k miles it is finally being a VW. I went to drive to get lunch the other day and I couldn’t get it to change driving modes. I made a stop and when I restarted it, everything worked again. Also you may have seen my ongoing issues with moisture/condensation in the interior. And now that it’s warm again and I’m driving it how I want to (fast), it fights me when I try to downshift to 2nd. I rev-match my downshifts, so I do not understand why it will not let me change gear when I want.

I know better tires will help with the TC issues and I have summer wheels with S-04s on them doing that ‘Soon’ meme at me every morning. But it also is a bit boring around corners. My previous car, an SVT Focus, was much more lithe and nimble despite having far lower limits.

Yes I can buy a better suspension to help with the cornering and handling. But I am also getting tired of needing to constantly upgrade this car to make it drive the way I want it to.

I’m also too scared to work on it myself, mostly because it’s new and I’ve never owned a new car before, but also because it’s German and I’m terrified of breaking something.

But, anything else I could get I either have driven and do not like, cannot afford, or both. And also nothing else has plaid seats available.

You should jump ship while you can, lest you become another Jkm

Nah. I’m solidly liberal forever after all that’s happened in 10 or so years.

Oh, you meant a stressed out VW owner???

My screaming 150 horsepower car can be wrung out without getting any attention. Maybe you need to go down to a slower car.

That was the same with my SVT. But there isn’t anything on the market that works for me as well as the GTI does, despite its flaws.

I want to try a Nissan Juke Nismo RS. 215 HP with a 6-speed in a solid Japanese car.

Too small. To cheaply built. And I prefer not to drive like Mr. Bean.

It’s so close though. It’s got the character I want, but I want Japanese reliability with a German interior layout.

I had on 2005 Cooper So (the supercharged ones before the newer turbos) and felt the same way when I got my GTI to replace it. It’s too efficient, there’s no drama or flair. Torque curve is perfectly flat forever so shifting is optional. And with dsg it was just button pushing anyway. My Civic with the 2.0 na engine is slow, but more fun. I can rev it out in a gear or two and not have to be on the interstate to do it.

Yeah. The GTI just has no drama when it comes to driving it. There is plenty when it comes to reliability, but that isn’t what I want.

And I must admit that having real torque, not the imaginary kind is quite addicting. My SVT was great fun to wring out, but I can exploit gaps in traffic much better with my GTI.

Motorcycles fix every problem you have with cars. The slowest bike is faster than any car in traffic.

I forget, did you test out the FiST? Not going to pretend like Ford build quality is all that great but most every comparison I’ve seen said that despite it being slower, it’s more dynamic and fun than the GTI.

I briefly test drove a 500 Pop with a stick. I felt like I was wearing it and sitting on the at the same time.

I could stand to lose a few pounds, but I was not comfortable at all in that car.

No. I’m not going to get a bike. I have to wear professional attire for work. I am not going to wear wrinkled clothes and helmet hair all day.

Indeed I did. All that is true.

It is also horrendously laid out and styled inside and feels every bit the cheap car that it is.

And now that I am more familiar with boost I would probably not find driving one as jarring, I did not appreciate the amount of nerfing Ford did for 1st gear coupled with the huge punch you get once in 2nd. I did not feel at all like I was driving the car.

Having the real diff on my GTI makes a huge impact through the wheel as does the extra .4L to smooth out the turbo lag.

Nothing says ‘professional’ like a leather one piece with knee pucks and a logo across the chest. It really says ‘I know what I’m doing but I like to be safe too’ and can be a real deal maker in a lot of cases.

I can see that completely. I’m 6'4", 180 lbs, so I’m classically thin. It fits me pretty much perfectly, though I can see it becoming a problem if I start gaining mass in any way.

So what’s the plan then, live with the GTI as-is? Sounds like you don’t want to mod it and there’s nothing similar out there you want to replace it with.

Could also try out auto-X/HPDE’s or something, maybe taking the car to its limits, however different than you may want them to be, could bring some spark back into the relationship.

I’m not happy about it, but I am still going to mod it. Have better headlights already and will give springs a try to see if they liven it up any.

I am not opposed to doing the rear sway bar as well. And I need to learn VagCom coding so I can fully disable the TC.

I’m stuck with it for a while. I can’t afford to get anything else, nor do I see anything on the market that I’d even want. If I had lottery money I’d maybe consider a Golf R and have someone redo the interior and seats with the e-Golf blue plaid.
