Woke up this wonderful Sunday morning and started browsing TradeCarView, as you do, while eating my bowl of off-brand Shreddies.

Came across this:

Kinja'd!!!

Busso V6 AND a manual! And it’s a wagon! Manual wagon Alfa with beige interior ftw! How much financial and emotional pain would this cause if one were to ever buy it, because.....HHHNNNGGGG!

The Busso is a reliable engine and roads in Japan are good, so you will not worry so much about the suspension made out of wet cardboard. Parts in Euorpe have a huge range from thing that are fairly cheap to some that surpass even BMWs. In Japan most probably a lot of them are piggy bank breakers.

The 156/147/GT family are not unreliable cars that all think they are because Alfas. They have their problems, mostly because of some stupid design choices, but the mechanicals(diesels and Busso) are all great.

Heh, my parents have one (back in New Zealand) – though theirs only has the 2.0 four, rather than the V6. I drove it last time I visited; they look stunning inside and out, but there are definitely a few signs of form-over-function in the design – driver ergonomics are questionable, and the rear legroom and load capacity are smaller than you might think. Fantastic to drive, though.

Bah, I can put up with form over function :P

How has theirs been reliability-wise? :)

It’s not been trouble free, or so I gather. Not long after they bought it, the catalytic converter made a bid for freedom and plugged up the exhaust. I think there have been a few electrical gremlins, too, but I don’t think there have been any other majors.

All in all, I don’t think it’s been any worse than any of the other ‘90s and early 2000s European cars I’ve been acquainted with. Not great, but fine to live with so long as you don’t mind putting a bit of work in now and then.

And really, all is forgiven once you drive it. The 2.0 version I drove isn’t fast, but it makes a lovely noise, and begs you to rev it hard. Handles nicely, too. The Busso with a manual, I imagine, would be utterly stunning.

Catalytic converter could disintegrate on any car, so that’s not a big deal. Electrical....hmm....depends what kind of electrical, I guess, haha! :)
