Oppo question: how do you define "sports car"

Is it a high-horsepower monster with loads of torque and a 4-second 0-60? Or is it a little, light-weight car with a high revving engine that carves corners?

Because I think it’s the latter, and I think it’s why I want to punch FP commenters in the face.

I think it’s an arbitrary thing, because everyone will argue about what a sports car is.

For example, by your first definition, the S8 Plus is a sports car. By your second definition, some sort of kei convertible is a sports car. Is either right? Is either wrong? Who really cares?

It’s a car that’s meant to be faster and more engaging to drive than the average econobox.

Why not both?

Who cares about labels.

Two seats, sporty. It can be a 700hp Corvette or a 100hp Miata, I’m fine with both of them.

Being at the bottom end of the performance spectrum.

Sports Car < Performance Car < Super Car < Hypercar

Example:

MX5 < M3 < Hellcat < Aventador SV

I’d say it’s more of the latter than the former, but it’s so arbitrary that it’s hard to say for sure. I generally say that at the very least it should handle well. But to play devil’s advocate with myself, you could consider any car that does well at any motorsport to be a a sports car, so any muscle car could be a sports car by virtue of drag racing.

A car that’s first purpose is to being fun rather than dependability.

Not my car....... the Solara, while it has two seats and two doors and is pretty quick in a straight line and around corners, is no sports car. No steering feel whatsoever, very heavy at 3700 pounds, wrong wheel drive, and has a slush box. While it may be able to keep up (on a curvy road) with something like a Mustang or a Miata maybe even a BRZ, I wouldn’t dare call it a sports car.

My definition is if its designed to be a sports car from the beginning.

MX5, FRS? Of course. Same for Corvette, 911, SLK, etc. GTI, Hellcat and a E-class AMG for example, not so much. Not that they’re not great, they’re just comprised by being something else first.

I wouldn’t normally, but it seems like most of the FP thinks the Toyobarus are failures as sports cars because they don’t have 300+ horsepower, while I think that these people are just dipweeds who won’t be happy with anything that isn’t a $24k C63

YES. And to specify, fun rather than comfort as well. Because this is neither dependable nor fun in the traditional sense.

Better yet, say fun rather than practical. Because I would not consider a Northstar Caddy a sports car, but it’s far from dependable.

Sportiness to me is a competent chassis that isn’t overwhelmed by the engine (Miata) .

The opposite is a muscle car that is all about the engine and completely overwhelms the chassis (Hellcat).

A supercar has both and they’re balanced nicely (McLaren).

This all predates me or my interest in cars but there have been exceptions from the beginning. But by tradition, a sports car is an open top two seater that was used for “sport” or competition driving.

Usually hardtops with up to 4 seats were then considered GT cars.

And 5 seaters were sedans.

Again, *i think* that’s how it used to be defined.

But I think by the 80/90s the definition got pretty mashed up. At this point, I don’t think there is a great universal definition. I would say sports car is driven more by size, and design focus, and less by speed.

agree - I was on the fence about number of seats, but figure you can call “sporty” cars with 4 seats a GT car. And no judgey judgey either, warm/hot hatches and sport sedans/coupes can be as fun as a true “sports car”.

Absolutely. I always just used ‘sports car’ to clarify specifically a two seater. If it’s got four seats it isn’t lesser to me, it’s just not technically a sports car. Nothing wrong with it.
