So this video begs the question to a dumb ‘Merican like me, what ARE the import laws for Aussieland?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

They weren’t allowed to bring a whole car into the country, but didn’t explain why. If it was North America, it be because it wasn’t old enough... so is there an age LIMIT? Or are they not allowed to import ANYTHING regardless of age?

I’m curious and don’t want to spend hours on Google trying to decipher the gory details, I figure someone here would know the quick answer.

I thought Australia had pretty lenient import rules (MCM has imported several cars in the past). I haven’t looked into why this car would have been illegal to import as an actual car but I feel like it may have either have to do with it being a Kei car or the fact that it was designated scrap in Japan.

EDIT: Google leads me to believe it has something to do with how Kei cars don’t have to be crash tested and that Australia has a “pre-1989" rule which seems to be similar to our 25-year rule.

Here you go: https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/

It seems that you cannot import a car into Australia unless it is on a list of approved cars.

It may not of been a car that was given approval for sale in Oz, maybe that it was already heavily modifed prior to import which invalidated a previous type approval, etc...

Thankfully we don’t have Aussie or 15 or 25 year law rules in the U.K.

I’ve subscribed because I’ve got to follow this rebuild.

You know how it’s usually cheaper to buy a parts car then to buy the actual parts. Well imagine if you could import a parts car but avoid all the duties, regulations and taxes involved in vehicle importation.

yeah i wish they would have explained that more. The thing that most confused me was that they were finding a shell to build up a car. So they couldn’t import that particular car but could find an identical one in australia? doesnt make sense.

the Autozam was brought in under the personal car rule, if you have owned it and used it for 12 months you can apply to bring it in.

I’d heard it had been wrecked up in NT somewhere though.

the Mira was sold here locally by Daihatsu, there’s a ‘silhouette’ rule that means if a car was already sold in Australia it’s nearly impossible to get it on the SEVs register. Even if that trim level was never sold here.

But the rules were more relaxed pre-2006, and there are other personal import law schemes if you have owned the car for 12+ months.

If they went into any further detail on the various laws and loopholes over the last few decades then you’d have a 30 min episode in itself.

Well they didn’t explain any of it and I don’t want a whole episode detailing the laws. And what is an SEV register?

Specialist & Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme register. It’s just a list of vehicles that the government deem OK to be brought over in low volume.

The general rule is that it can’t have been offered here locally by the manufacturer. Though it depends as much as who is the decision maker at the time of the application. You get weird things like Altezza Gita’s being knocked back because the IS200 Sedan was offered here.. but the Aristo is OK even though the GS300 was sold here.

Oh wow. That’s commitment. The dude who’s got it loves it, and is a Japanese parts importer so it makes sense he’d have lived over there.

Can’t wait to see that thing again!

If it was wrecked it was fixed. It’s definitely still kickin’.

man that one looks sweet.

It looks like there’s more than one in Australia now, so who knows if that was the one that got wrecked. The number plates look super familiar...

That’s what I want to hear, don’t stop. I wish every car in this country was an AZ-1. We’d have to redesign our roads and passenger/load carrying would be severely effected but IDGAF it’d be sick.

Why is it no matter where you are in the world politicians have no idea about cars and the laws they create makes no logical sense.

everywhere except New Zealand. God bless their ridiculously lax import laws.
