I’m going to attempt the stupidest Washington to California and back run - mostly because of my friend who’s about to be homeless. Thank God I’m able to rent a Nissan Altima from Enterprise but... Anyone got any tips for such a 12x2 hour run? I’m doing this within Monday and Tuesday in a few days.

Split the driving for sure and think about stopping at a motel overnight and tackling the rest of the going back drive in the morning.

Caffeine.

Mentally-engaging audio - I generally use podcasts. Calling someone to talk with them helps more, having a passenger to talk with helps even more.

Beef jerky - the tougher the better. Gives you calories without stopping, and requires a lot of work to chew, helping keep you awake.

Truck stops usually have showers. Don’t get ripe.

If your local library has audiobooks available on the overdrive app do that. Makes a 12 hour road trip fly by and it’s free.

I stop often. I can do about 2 hrs then take a 5-10 minute break outside of the car to recenter. I did a 740 mile day last fall, it sucked but I made it. Also don’t hit the caffeine until you need it otherwise it will just make you jittery. I usually go with milder drinks like coke or pepsi. Red bull if desperate.

I used to eat mixed jelly beans when I had to drive at night. Nothing shocks you awake more than biting into a really nasty flavor and (this was forever ago) rushing to crank down the window to spit it out.

This stuff is better than caffeine at keeping you awake.

I’ve done that drive a few times, straight through. I go equipped with a big box of Goldfish, some apples, waters, and a pack of gum. I also like getting caffeinated tea at gas stops. Make sure you have enough music/standup/audiobook on deck to not repeat anything. Take Red Bulls or similar if you prefer, but those things fuck me up. I find that snacking keeps me awake better than energy drinks anyway. Also ration your water intake so you you don’t have to stop for bathroom breaks until gas stops. Good luck!

No doubt. Rockstar has some good stuff. All I can think of is Cucumber flavored burps though. That has to be a regional flavor.

It’s different, that’s for sure. I like it a lot. It has a tiny bit of sugar.

Cucumber lime stuff can actually be really refreshing, though, if done right.

I’m not closed minded enough to not try it. I don’t think we’ll see it in Iowa soon though.

Audio book for entertainment. Something salty, something sweet for munchies. A five-hour energy shot, taken at the mid-point of the drive. Something sweet to drink. A bottle of water to cleanse your palate.

I did the 12x2 turnaround pulling an 8x12 uhaul last year. There were only two stops each way, but I can hold my water. When my wife and kids are along for the ride, the trip becomes 14 hours each way, usually plot up over two days. I can’t seem to get them out of the house at a decent hour and they have bladders the size of grapes.

5 hour energy drinks really do perk you up, and it is a small volume of liquid to minimize pee stops. I also like Coke Zero in the little cans or plastic bottles for sipping, as well as little plastic bottles of water. I get the Jack Links beef stick and cheese stick combos to snack on, gives you protein and keeps the works just slightly clogged, if ya know what I mean. Stop and nap if you get snoozy. I prefer to travel at night, especially for something that is just a 12 hour trip. The traffic is lighter and the speeds are faster.

I like long distance car trips... I do them for the enjoyment, the scenery and the challenge of minimizing my travel times over distances that most people would prefer to fly. Enjoy the trip and be safe.
