Started a new job (sys admin for 6 engineering labs) about three weeks ago to replace the current person that’s either moving up or is going to retire.

A couple of days ago I stop by the mans desk and I see a BMW key, so I ask him what he’s got.

“2002 330i. I love the car, great engine, but some of the stupid things they did, like plastic pieces inside the door connecting two metal parts of the window mechanism, that was fun to fix. Luckily we work with a couple hundred engineers with the ability to make just about anything.”

Noted.

Today, while waiting for AutoCAD 2018 installers to download, at a blistering 200k to 300k, so I’ve got some time, I see very familiar oval and square keys on his desk, so I jokingly ask if he drove the beater, because those are Ford keys.

“Oh, that’s my 91 Taurus SHO Plus. That’s the car I usually drive. Had the engine rebuilt at 200k and the thing still gets the same MPG as it did originally. Performance is pretty equal to the BMW.”

“Plus? Never heard of a SHO Plus.” Tells me what makes it a Plus.

I tell him how I used to borrow my parents Taurus, which was not a SHO, rotten egg smell and all, and occasionally my dad would let me borrow the 280ZX, the first 2 door I ever drove...

He says “I had a 1970 240z and a then another later 240 that I bought the year before they turned them in to something I wouldn’t buy”.

Cars, trucks, bikes. Bringing people together, and improving 90 day reviews...

A SHO plus sounds interesting. I’m suprised Ford hasn’t made it a “package” on newer SHOs. Since it was just a cosmetic package.

Having a boss who is a car geek, know that’s what I call a job perk.

They do have a performance package for the current SHO, referred to as the PP. It gets a slightly lower final drive and traction control is (more) defeat-able. There’s maybe a few other small things I’m not recalling.

Sometimes I wish I had that package, but I’m happy with the regular :)

I didn’t know that. I was always impressed by the Yamaha made engine. Ford should have kept working with them,

Casually drops that he had two 240z’s with appropriate follow up. This guy should be a friend.

Yes, that could’ve continued to be an interest relationship to continue.

Also odd, Ford has a history of grabbing engines from other manufacturers. The got the 3.9 V8 for the Thunderbird and LS from Jag and the V6 and V8 for the SHO from Yamaha.

It must’ve been a packaging thing, because this whole time they had their own 4.6l V8. It sure would’ve been great if the LS got the 4.6, it would’ve been so much more modifiable.

Chilling with the president of my company recently she told me about her first car. A manual 69 Mustang with a 390. She’s been a car nut ever since.

Her current car is an S7.

Well in Ford’s defense they turned the S-Type into a Lincoln, so the LS got all of it’s goodies and some problems. The V8 LS Lincolns have a pretty diehard following. Although I think it has been waning for a few years.

Packaging or union contract deal? The 4.6 was more for the Mustang, and you can’t have a 4 door sedan let alone a Lincoln take Mustang sales.

If that’s in a shop, that’s a great selection of SHOs, if that’s on a shelf at your place, that’s a lot of SHO love.
