So I started a new job recently and when they asked what I’d want as a work laptop to work from home I may have joked about what I wanted to hard. because today they gave me this...

Kinja'd!!!

haha I don’t need this for work.

For non PC folks this is like getting a Corvette as a work car when you really only need a kia..

For some reason creatives all still think they have to use mac to do creative work.

Been using the adobe suite on PC/Windows since 2002 - it’s completely fine over there and your cost per machine will plummet for the performance switching to PC.

Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 32.0 GB DDR4

Hard drives:

1 TB NVMe SSD

I work on large photoshop files, illustrator, and every now and again - video editing but 75% of my time is just a web browser, slack, and office. That said, Photoshop and Illustrator are never closed.

And a quadro card! I opted for the GTX 1070 since it’s a better card for the general computing that I do (mix of photoshop, illustrator, video compression, and web stuff) but those Quadro cards are great for CAD.

So far I am impressed with the Quadro this is the first I’ve used. In the past I steered clear because of OpenGL. Pushes 4k easily (4k display) and may play a few games nicely as well (of course I’ve never tested being a work machine).

Kinja'd!!! "KusabiSensei - Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs" (kusabisensei)
03/29/2017 at 09:57, STARS: 1

Yeah, but then the IT department will go completely overboard with AD GPO, which ends up making a Core i7 6820HQ with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD about as fast as a PDP-11.

Technically it’s the fact that the Shadow Copy Service likes to quiesce drive access, and so does Microsoft’s Antimalware tool. Oh, and let’s throw on BitLocker.

(One of the senior architects of our software actually said to a group of us bitching about BitLocker: “You know, they are all working off the of the premise that our ideas are actually worth stealing. Have you actually seen our code? I wouldn’t take it if it were given to me as a present. It’s that bad.”)

So now we are all doing the important work on Linux VMs, because nobody has time for that shit.

Kinja'd!!! "SOCdriver" (socdriver)
03/29/2017 at 10:29, STARS: 0

Shadow copy and bitlocker only for those that need PCI compliance. All code should be stored in a VM instance that you are work from, if you are programming you get a Linux and Windows instance each. Store everything on the cloud, if its on your SSD drive and it dies too bad, everyone has 1TB of cloud storage. You had a PST file? Why? Your email already archives and you have 500 GB of storage. Lost it? Well you know the rules. There is not much bitching about computers at my work, I don’t let policy hurt productivity.

Kinja'd!!! "KusabiSensei - Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs" (kusabisensei)
03/29/2017 at 11:13, STARS: 0

Fortunately, all my stuff is already on secure storage and backed up in multiple approved places.

But some tool decided that O365's Litigation Hold is the perfect way to do mailbox shadow copy in some a fool in need of a clue by four deletes something and then empties Deleted Items.

So when we hit the 100GB account quota? Kaboom. Microsoft’s suggested step? Delete their AD account and try again from scratch.
