Not mine. New build. No idea, but I’m guessing they didn’t seal the basement windows or something this winter, and the best solution they could come up with to deal with it was NOT to clean it up right away but rather to put boards over top of it and try to melt it now that it’s a little warmer out...

Worst thing, that perhaps isn’t obvious from the picture as it appears dry under the heater, is that it’s 4-5" deep. Ice/packed snow. Ain’t gonna melt fast because that’s just not what snow does. And we’ve still got properly cold nights going on... this guy’s framing is going to be all over the place before this is done. And unless he dries it out really well there’s going to be other issues down the line.

Ice and snow. Guessing (well, I suppose it isn’t really a guess now, is it) they didn’t seal the place during winter and then proceeded to “deal” with it in a really stupid way.

Is that a dirt floor? or is there just so much snow in there you can’t see the concrete.

Believe it or not, there’s concrete under that. I had the same thought when I walked in though...

That’s just “Builder’s Grade” flooring, that’s all.

That’s why I decided when I renovated my house to get rid of the crawl space, and made a heated floating slab as my foundation.

Kinja'd!!!

No water problems, since my whole slab is above ground. No humidity or humidity smell like the crawl space i had before.

But what about it’s chandelier?

Does it pass the dr.Zoidberg test?

I honestly have second thoughts about even supplying material to it.

It won’t bite us long term because any problems the owner will face won’t be our responsibility, but the builder doesn’t seem to know what he’s doing and that’ll make him hard to deal with in the short term and we may end up victims of his ignorance. Price of doing business in construction I guess

Little things that stick out to me:

His framing is neatly done. The sign of a good framer. But many things are wrongly placed—something that counters that. To me that says they were given wrong instructions.

He’s nearly at drywall stage and still doesn’t have much of an idea what trims he wants. Not uncommon with people building their own houses, but professional builders generally know more or less what they want at this point.

Little to no coherence in the basement layout. No stairs at the moment. Access is through a hole in the garage wall of through the walkout. No doubt stairs WILL be added (duh), and lack of an actual staircase isn’t unheard of at this stage, but there doesn’t even appear to be provision for them. The corresponding space with the main floor appears occupied already. Which points to more last-minute changes.

Obvious lack of care as demonstrated by the photos.

etc.

Nothing wrong with that, it’s a legitimate indoor heating method. And better than sitting an electric heater in there. But snow doesn’t melt fast. And we’ve still got really cold nights. And you probably don’t want to leave a combustion-type heater on when you aren’t there. His framing is going to be all out of whack before this is gone, and it could have been so easily solved with a shovel.

At the moment the closest thing to a chandelier in here is a hole in the foundation wall for dunno what. Probably utilities. Not my specialty.

Yeah, I’m really not understanding the logic behind letting it all melt. Seems like shovels and buckets would be 10x better. Maybe they’re planning to pump the water out?

Even still, what they’ll be doing is allowing the framing to sit underwater for a while.

Better dry that out good... or...

bad things.

Construction in general is a shitshow. People make changes, people make mistakes, people don’t make up their minds, people don’t do due diligence.

Usually, though, they don’t all happen at once.
