What's up with that: Fuses Edition.   What do you think this does?

I’ve seen these things for the last few years in my 12 volt adventures, and I knew in the back of my mind they would cause me some difficulty. And the parts counter at the dealership was amazed at this weird thing i’d found. They had one, but it’s the first they’d ever heard of it.

I did a bit of research as to why a fuse would have three legs, I thought maybe this was a triumph of electrical engineering. I got the answer I was looking for, it was dissapointing. What do the oppos think it does?

That’s a BMW 2002 in the background, it’s not from that. I’m sure that one has equally confounding German fuses.

Well, they seem to want a combined load on the two circuits to be under the limit, with one circuit killing both if it dies and the other one just killing itself. Could also be used to offer the ability to kill a fuse on purpose - say, if this were for a fuel pump, the accident sensors could short the middle leg.

I’m sure the real answer is more dumberer, though.

I was thinking it would be a space saver, being allowed to protect two circuits from a single feed.

Then I realized that you would need to replace the whole fuse when only one circuit blew.

That looks like a 20A. What’s it for?

single source wire feeding two circuits. totally about saving space in the PDB.

That’s mildly confusing... get it? Get it? Ok I leave

Seems like it would do one of two things depending on how the wired it:

Act as a two in one fuse for cost or space reasons. If either side of the fuse blows, you’d need to replace the whole thing.

Limit the total current through the fuse, while also putting an additional limit on the second circuit. This only makes sense if the fuse links have asymmetric limits.

2 really doesn’t make much sense to me, so I’d guess the first one?

It’s a Micro3 fuse. Seems to be a new standard. Space saving seems to be important feature. The center peg is probably the “input” and it’s routed to two separate circuits. The fuse boxes would get shorther but a bit wider.

Space and weight savings(fuck off)is the official answer, but more about doing 2 fuses job with 1.5 fuses

So it’s just some silly cost-cutting measure for the manufacturer, so they can have a smaller fuse box with fewer fuses?

the new f-150 don’t start without it.

1.5 fuses doing the job of two. centre leg feeds the outside two. I’ve bricked a number of vehicles and made them all run again, these are just so you can’t hillbilly it on the side of the road.

I bet you *can* hillbilly it on the side of the road - just more involved.

It could be a room issue, not just costs. The amount of fuses is getting ridiculously high in modern vehicles. Many of these have several fuse boxes around the vehicle, as they don’t fit inside on main unit anymore. Of course it’s not just the fuses but the high number of wires too.

Two circuits on a single fuse because modern cars have so many electric circuits that having an individual package for each circuit would make for a massive fuse box.

They suck when something goes from “intermittent problem” To “ Brick of allum num” out in the back 40 of nowhere. also this fuse cost 14 Canadian loon monies at ford.

that reminds me of a time I was working on a prototype vehicle, and popped a fuse. I was off-site so the best I could do was hit up a couple of auto parts stores. I came in asking if they had this fuse:

Kinja'd!!!

all they had were ATM style fuses:

when they invariably asked what kind of car it was, all I could do was sheepishly answer “something you can’t buy yet.” I think it (2013 Fusion) was one of the first to use the Micro2 fuse size.

What does the other leg do?

Could you flip it and get the truck started, or did they send the other leg to the fuel pump or some other crippling shit like that?

The problem with new fuses occurs when you actually need to find them.

I robbed one from “power seats” to get it going, this is a fleet model, power company vehicle, fully manual seats. This however, disabled the airbag system because “power seats” includes the passenger seat weight sensor so the airbags don’t kill your kids. these are not available at farm supply places and lots of folks are just confounded by it’s existence.

And yes, you can hillbilly everything, but this truck lives at a natural gas storage cavern (also a thing) so soldering with fire, and arcing are discouraged.

Didn’t think about that. I’m so used to cars having only two fuse panels, each about the size of, say, a sandwich.

Take something simple and re-engineer it to be more expensive, complicated, with hard to find parts. How did i know this was going to be a Ford thing.

Ford are the masters of the elegantly simple part that is doing a job badly that should never be on the list of Things To Be Done in the first place.

He said it didn’t work when he did that, which means multiple essential systems are on separate feeds in immediate parallel.
