I used to own a Fiat 500D (the really early ones with the backwards doors), it was monumentally shit. And not shit because by the time I had it, it was already pushing 60, shit because it was just plain shit.

It wasn’t a well-designed automobile, it wasn’t a particularly clever automobile and even for the time it was released in it was a fucking slow automobile.

The 126 is a bit better designed packaging wise. However I’ve been reading a lot of old road tests, and found one where they were testing several of the cheapest cars available in England at the time (1970s) and the author explained why they included the 2cv but left out the 126, to paraphrase: the 126 was literally “incompetent” at being a motor vehicle. The test included a Reliant Rialto, which they noted wasn’t even a car legally, so that says a lot about the relative qualities of the 126.

Haha, wow...they did not have a lot of faith in it then :P
The 70's 126 was essentially a new body with FIAT 500 underpinnings (well, the 126 was essentially that through the whole of it’s existance...), but I like to hope that later improvements made it more livable :P
